Browns of Brockley

I was so happy to have this place open after the Christmas break. I am seriously addicted to your coffee! And every single person working there is lovely.
These guys do small cups of pure perfection and that comes at a cost. I’m not a coffee snob — I will drink any coffee but I also appreciate great coffee & have no problem paying for it. If you want a large shitty coffee that costs £2.50 go somewhere else.
And if you have a sweet tooth their brownies, banana bread and cupcake donuts are all yummy. I recently tried their yoghurt with muesli & apple and loved that too. Lunch options are pretty good too with a changing menu of salads, soups & sandwiches.
All the hype is well deserved!

Certainly worth the walk, one of the best cappucini I’ve had in uk recently — perfectly prepared and served by knowledgeable friendly staff! We were too late for the pastries unfortunately but enjoyed the last remaining brownie… So good I had to have a second cup :)

What can I say: an incompetent bunch of student hipsters! They gave my order to someone who got served after me who came back with their own complaint as they were refunding my cash. If you’re in the area, you should definitely try the Brocca.

Great coffee, definitely! Just by the station. The place is small but friendly with nice staff. Pricey though! An ice coffee for 3,50!!!

Excellent and conscientious coffee and friendly staff. I hear the croissants are excellent but I didn’t get to try any. My simple smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel was generous and hit the spot for a hungry stomach.
No bathrooms though, so be warned!

When I lived in Brockley there were three gangland murders in three years. Now Brockley’s home to a café — Brown’s — that features in the ‘Independent Coffee Guide — London’, How times change.
And change they have. There was always an impressive community spirit in Brockley, nurtured by people who had lived there for decades, determinedly organising events like Brockley Max in what then otherwise wasn’t the greatest cultural hotspot in the world. Now the community, at least judging by Brown’s clientel, is more hipster and young family. Wow.
Brown’s itself has all the hallmarks of the cafes found in north east London: flash espresso machine, specialist coffee (Square Mile), the usual paraphernalia for sale (e.g. Aeropresses and V60s), free wifi and tasty looking cakes. I went for a flat white, which though somewhat smaller than I expected, was pretty good: a faithful ratio between coffee and milk, and milk that had the right level of microfoam. Yum.
What wasn’t so welcome however was the price: at £3 for a tiny amount (was it 6 oz?), it was by some margin the most expensive small flat white I’ve ever bought. I think the flat whites from Flat Cap Coffee in Westminster are better, and they cost £2.40 (£3 buys you a three shot version). Elsewhere, indeed, £2.10-£2.50 seems to be the market price for a flat white.
That price gives me a lot of pause for thought when it comes to rating Brown’s. I’d like to give it 3.5, but as I think 3 is a bit unfair, I’m marking it 4.

The hot chocolate was OK — nice environment to sit down and people watch.

Fantastic coffee and staff. I have been a customer here since they started almost ⁴⁄₅ years ago and watched it bloom to the café it is now.

Only 4 stars because it is slightly over priced for the area and bocca next door. But in a city where it’s hard to find a good coffee, it’s worth it :)

Simply the best coffee. Takes a bit of time but well worth the wait. Don’t think I’ve had better coffee in London. Right by the station makes it convenient for commuters and free wifi is perfect for anyone looking for a chilled-​out place to get a coffee and some work done. If you’re in the area, give it a try!

Simply superb coffee. Great machine, great roaster equals good coffee.

There is a pug dog. His name is Ludd. He wanders about amid the smell of some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted.
It’s art. The little swirley pattern in the foam, perfect every time. I drink one and I want another instantly. There are sandwiches on bread that is thick and full of flavour, and cakes that look like they’ve been glazed and painted by tiny little people with tiny little paintbrushes.
And the place is light and calm and airy. It feels as if the room is slightly removed from everything else. In a place where everything is still and quiet and everything tastes better.
And Ludd rules over all.

I don’t get the hype of this café. It’s probably bustling and busy because it’s the only half decent coffee shop in Brockley.
It’s not bad overall but the coffee isn’t outstanding and at 2.50 for a small latte, it’s a bit pricey for its suburban location.
There’s an interesting selection of food, but salmon and cream cheese bagel at 3.50? A custard egg tart at 1.50? Fine if you’re selling at London Bridge station, but not at Brockley, especially if it’s not outstandingly good.
Food and drink on its own gets 3 stars, but factoring in the price, 2 stars is fair.

Stunningly good coffee, very well made. If you were going to introduce someone to coffee, this is the place to do it. They also serve both sweet and savory foods all of which are both reasonably priced and very tasty.
The service and environment could not be friendlier right down to the café’s resident pet and mascot — a pug called Ludd.

NB: the one downside to the place is that it has no lavatories

I travel 5 trains stops at least a couple times a week just to drink the square mile coffee, eat brownies and pet the pug dog. Love this place, accept no substitute. Certainly the best coffee south of the river.

Excellent café located opposite Brockley Station, south of New Cross, and wonderfully hidden from the high street. This café boasts excellent coffees and even better cakes.
One long table dominates the small room, set against dark shelves and furniture with clean white walls. The façade is un-​intimidating and underplayed, plain black with a small, neat chalk board outside.
The staff are polite and friendly without being fake. Famous within the area with a strong set of local customers, you can understand why people keep coming back. Definitely worth checking out, regardless if you’re in Brockley or not.
