Brixton Windmill

I love Heritage sights. The people who staff them are usually volunteers and are super passionate about whatever sight you may be visiting. The Brixton Windmill is no different.
I expected a large park with a windmill on the far side, so when I entered the park I was looking for a windmill in the distance. I almost walked right into it. It’s painted all black (actually tar) and the sails were hidden by the surrounding trees. Only when our path came to an abrupt end did we realize we were standing at the foot of it. So, the park? Not that big.
The tour was free and really interesting, more for the fact that you get to go all the way up the inside of the windmill than for the actual facts, though they were relayed by a really passionate guide so of course they were fun, too. The tour is small with only 4 people total (including guide) at any given time due to the cosy interior. This gave plenty of opportunity for questions. However, due to a sound installation by a local artist of what a working windmill might sound like, it was hard to hear the guide all of the time. Perhaps turning down the installation a tad might help?
Tours are offered rarely, maybe one weekend per month, and should be booked in advance. I believe the windmill is closed otherwise.

If you are able to go out of your way for this feast, it is such a please to gaze upon a piece of the past tucked away in full view in the present.
Tall, majestic, strong and distinguished. Shame there are not more men such of this to be found!
