Service was prompt, there were ample boats to select from, and I got to pick between a rowboat or a kayak. I went with the rowboat because they were just the size for a romantic row for two, and while my girlfriend sat there, I rowed her constantly looking over my shoulder to correct our direction one way or the other. Despite my difficulty in steering, I found it easy to get to and from the Carriage Drive Bridge(which is blocked so you can’t go under) and back in ½-hour so you won’t have to pay for more. That said, I work out occasionally so some might need to turn back without reaching the bridge. Bring cash. I had to walk all the way to Knightsbridge Station to find a cash point, and I’m an American so I didn’t even know what a «cash point» was.

The Serpentine Lake is named because of the snake-like shape as it wends its way from Kensington Gardens through into Hyde Park. The boating service is running from February until end of October and even gives a Londoner for a moment the feeling to have escaped from the busy city life. There is the choice between the rowboats and the pedal boats. We always go for the rowing boat, even though it is more work, it is much more fun and definitely polishes up your rusty rowing skills. Boats can be rented by the hour or half the hour. You will be asked to put on a yellow safety vest in case of an emergency. But before hiring a boat, make sure you got yourself one of those delicious sandwiches from Harrods and something to drink(they do not allow alcohol). If it is sunny do not to forget your sunglasses and bathing costume. This is crazy, but even in London there are times where you can get a tan! It can get a little bit crowded when entire London decides to hire a boat on a sunny day. However, you learn the rules on little Serpentine Lake fast, especially if you over run in time, faster motor boats will come and get you.
