I had the worse experience at this branch today. I waited 2 weeks to get an appointment to open a bank account. I showed the documents at the time I made the appointment and they told me «looks good! that’s all you need». Two weeks later I come back with the same documents. Ms Tricia Dyer is photocopying my acceptance letter and I tell her«You should be photocopying the other letter, the one the college issued to the bank. That is the one that has my UK address». The lady had not even READ the letter before photocopying. From the onwards… Nightmare! At first, she refuses to accept the letter the college issued to the bank. Then her manager tells her it’s okay to accept it. She comes back to me and instead of APOLOGIZING, she tells me the 2nd letter WOULD have been okay but there is a typo and she cannot accept it. The letter said«2014÷5». She said she could only take it if it said«2014÷2015». Because clearly, I’m a time-traveler and will finish my master sometime between 2014 and 2005. In that order. 0. o At that point, I couldn’t deal with it anymore. I file a complaint with the manager and left. Just around the corner, at Lloyds, they were A LOT friendlier and effective.

A nightmare. Long lines, understaffed, unfriendly staff who will just try to put you on a phone with«customer service». Avoid this Barclays location by all means.

No good for international travel. ATM transaction using Connect Card refused in San Francisco. Half hour on phone with«customer service» and«fraud» department. Asked me *many* security questions until they found one I could not possibly remember: what month a particular transaction happened from several months previous. Unbelievable incompetence and stupidity. Then I decided to try to deposit a personal Barclays check into my San Francisco BofA account. Not happy with a deposit fee and whatever retail profit they make on the currency exchange, the exchange rate offered was several points below that days rate which amounted to a total potential fee of over £200– to deposit my funds from one bank account to another! Predators.

You hear nightmare stories about how difficult it is to open a bank account in the UK as a foreigner. This is one of the places where those nightmares come to life. Funny how they have ads at the entrance which balloons which say something of the effect of «we celebrate every new customer!». Wrong. Long queues, unfriendly staff with little patience, who took a position contrary to what was explicitly stated in my documents. Listen, I have money, quite of bit of it, to put in your hands. I want to open a bank account, not take out a loan which I’ll never pay off. You’d think that would afford me a little more than a quick dismissal. Thank god HSBC down the block has their heads on straight, booked an appointment for me and had me set up quickly.
