I like wine. I really do. For me, wine bars are the ideal location to relax and have a good time. Whether you’re with friends or need a break after a heavy afternoon of shopping, sit down and have a glass to relax! Because of this, I’m always looking to try new places for wine. We happened to finish up our shopping on Jermyn street, and Fortnum and Mason were around the corner so we stopped in for something to relax. First, it is inside Fortnum and Mason and it’s downstairs. So you must traverse through all the goodies to get to the place. It’s not huge, but it is a nice place. They do wines by the bottle, glass or, if you’re feeling super experimental, by the flight. I’m a huge fan of wine flights, and we opted for the champagne of the month flight. It was three glasses from their featured bubbly. And they were all good. The service can be a bit slow at times, but it’s impeccable. They really go above and beyond when they make a mistake or there is a problem! There was a slight problem with our bill(the price of the flights were £3 too high), and while it took them awhile to get it sorted, they made sure we were completely happy before we left.(A little extra bubbly on the house? Don’t mind if I do!) If I’m in the area, I’ll be back. It’s a bit pricier than other places, but it’s nice to have a variety.

Hidden away in the basement of Fortnum and Mason, 1707 was a lucky find for my friend and me as we sought refuge from the hustle and bustle of frenetic tourists and last minute Christmas shoppers. It was a Sunday afternoon, and were surprised how easily we were about to find seats even though it was packed like sardines upstairs. We started drooling over the cheese cart, so we ordered the selection of 3 for £12(2 for £8, 5 for £15) and it came with a wonderful mix of crackers(or biscuits as you Brits call it) and bread. Definitely come here after a day of shopping in the area.

Designed by David Collins, this is a cool little pocket in old-school Fortnum & Mason. 1707 was created as part of the store’s 300-year anniversary and huge refurbishment(hence the name) and sits just beside the extensive wine department. I’m a bit of a claustrophobe so surprised myself at how much I loved this windowless basement space. Not the best spot for a very intimate session, the room is quite bright but feels like a contemporary wine cellar — or the inside of a wine barrel. The white tiled floors, wood walls and funky black bar work so well. It’s perfect for an afternoon or pre-dinner glass(or) two of wine and a bite. Besides the large selection of wines available by the glass, you can buy a bottle of wine from the store’s wine department and drink it at the bar for a corkage fee of £10. They also do well-priced«wine flights» — three specially selected 125ml glasses which can also be paired with the menu.
