Why love this particular Waitrose, you may ask? Oh well. The little old man on the cake counter always has discounted cupcakes, that’s why! And not just any old cupcakes, cherry ones. My favourites, in other words. So I was once in here and the clock struck 2pm. And a weird thing happened. All the staff gathered as though under army instruction and went from aisle to aisle frantically making sure all cans and tins were practically symmetrical. This provided me with no end of food shoping entertainment. No wonder this store is so tidy. I hate this particular form of retail, but my, Waitrose makes it enjoyable!

Staying on a world cuisine tip, Waitrose has recently started selling Charlie Bigham’s mouthwatering Vietnamese Chicken, Thai Green Chicken curry and Catalan Chicken curries. Ideal for two to share, they’re packed with flavour and at £5.99 are perfect supper material. For those cooks that prefer to chop, slice, sautee or stir-fry their own dishes, Waitrose also stock a decent selection of Pan-Asian, Chinese and Thai ingredients. Last time I visited, they had lots of packets of rice and noodles, dozens of different sauces, oils and condiments and jars of Thai Taste and Blue Elephant Curry pastes. I can’t vouch for the peshwari naan but the lime and mango chutneys and Wagamama stir-fry sauces are all reasonably priced and pretty tasty.
