Don’t ask me why but writing about the deliciously gooey and crispy crème brûlée at San Carlo reminded me about the wonderful cream tea my mum and I had at the Waterhouse Café. Situated on the ground floor of the Victoria Gallery & Museum, the café is a great place to relax and take a proper look at the building’s Grade II listed, Victorian architecture. Though it’s open from 10am til 4pm for hot drinks and light meals, tradition dictates that you’re only allowed to order the cream tea after 2pm. Served on a silver tea-stand, it includes paper-thin salmon and cucumber sandwiches, plump home-made scones with whipped cream and jam, sticky strawberry tarts and mini chocolate eclairs. Tea and coffee comes in stainless steel pots and whilst the service is slow, the staff are friendly locals that are happy to suggest other museums and landmarks worth checking out.
