Also called the New Mersey Road Tunnel, constructed in 1966, the Kingsway Tunnel runs beneath the Mersey River, connecting the city of Liverpool to the Wirral peninsula. Together with the Queensway tunnel, it provides the only crossing for vehicles since there is no bridge. It’s a major venue for commuters who live on one side of the river but work on the other. There are tolls for going through the tunnels which offer no end of annoyance to drivers, especially considering that, apparently, these tolls were supposed to stop once the tunnels were paid for.
