The Cake Shop

Tasty cupcakes, they are big and there is a variety of flavours to choose. Quite decent price for their quality and size (£2.5 each and 4 for £8.5). The cake is very nice, as spongy and tasty as it should be, but the cream is quite too much and is not that tasty to match the ideal balance with the cake. I tried the Red Velvet (not something special, neutral taste), the Ferrero Rocher (too much chocolate, if you’re a choco lover, go for it) and the Oreo (great balance between chocolate cake and white cream) cupcakes and the Oreo was the best for me! Still not close to the best cupcakes I have ever tried (The hummingbird bakery, London-​Surrey).

If I was looking for a cake for a special occasion, I’d choose Naked Cake or Terry Tang over The Cake Shop any day. I know they probably have thousands of delighted customers but I don’t rate their designs.
The wedding and communion cakes are so frilly and old fashioned they should come with a free Hallmark card and the christening cakes are equally OTT. The cakes that make me want to run screaming in the opposite direction however, are the childrens birthday cakes. I know most bakeries use fondant figures but do The Cake Shop have to make their bears, cartoon characters and smiley-​faced children so cute it hurts? Really? Even Marks & Spencers make cooler and more contemporary cakes.

The Cake Shop just outside Liverpool Central station is always worth an intrigued look into passing by, displaying all sorts of cakes for every possible occasion. This interesting Cake Shop presents some cakes that look very impressive, making custom designs as well as examples from their own catalogue. As it is the only one that I have seen in Liverpool, I’d point it out as a place to head to for a crowd stopping wedding cake or special birthday cake; it never fails to have a few people browsing at the windows as they pass by.

Cake, Glorious Cake! This is *the* place to shop for that special occasion. From Happy Birthdays, to Unbirthdays and Weddings it caters for all, tucked away in Central Station is the sugary kingdom of the celebratory cake.
The wedding cakes are so gorgeous, they have 5 tiers of iced glittery cupcakes (one for each guest– personal and cute!), more traditional ones with glistening crystals and sleek white icing in the window.
They also have many novelty cakes, i-​pod iced for the grumpy teen? Michael Jackson themed (now a slightly dubious choice for a children’s birthday?), the cartoon character topped ones which are all delicately crafted and bright would be great for the little ‘uns.
As you pan across the windows crammed full of cakes, mouth watering expectantly, you reach the back room, the workshop… it’s exactly like where santa’s little elves make the toys, except you can see them being crafted. Cakey heaven. A little on the pricey side, but if you want to impress, then The Cake Shop will provide.

If you were born and raised in the UK, you will probably love these cakes. They are typical in that they are generally fruit cakes with boiled icing. I personally don’t understand the fascination. (In America, fruit cakes are generally jokes. If you are given one for Christmas it usually means someone either doesn’t like you, or they are playing a joke on you.)
However, the designs and decorations on these cakes are not so typical. They do every possible kind of cake you can imagine in all different shapes and colours. I’ve seen gay wedding cakes, Thomas the Tank engine cakes, castle cakes, and so much more. They can do pretty much anything you want.
They are a bit pricey, but if you want unusual and excellent, this is probably a really good place to buy your cake. But I personally won’t settle for the typical British fruit cake …

Are you a fruit cake? Or a sponge? White or green icing? We can only be starting to describe the combinations of fundamentals to your celebration cake. There is seemingly no limit to what shape you can sculpt sponge and icing into, from a football team to your favourite pet or even electrical device. The very centrepiece to your celebration, a cake is the very creative focal point to almost any party so why not go and see what you fancy.
I am a real nut for, nuts so they would have to play a big part in any cake-​related equations. My nut addiction extends to the covering with a thick layer of moist marzipan an absolute must. And it would be in the shape of the Death Star. It would probably be the most expensive cake in the shop but you have but one birthday/​anniversary/​Christmas a year.
Sadly there is a premium to be paid for such extensive choice and individuality and just a glance through the window here will reveal that although detailed and handsome the cakes are hardly cheap. One in the shape of an iphone (?!) was going to cost almost £100 — do you have any idea how many French Fancies you could get for that!

The cake shop in Liverpool Central Station is brilliant, there’s a huge variety of cakes for all sorts of different celebrations. I popped in after getting off the train as I thought I’d have a look for ideas for my wedding, as I don’t fancy the plain white tiered fruit cake
There are hundreds of photos of all the cakes they have made, actual cakes on display and staff who are willing to chat about your requirements.
A couple of the cakes that stuck in my mind were a top table at a wedding with little figures of all the guests, and another was the tiered fairy cakes. The prices are quite steep but the quality is really good, and worth the extra few quid.
Also, delivery is available throughout the whole of the UK so don’t worry if you’re visiting Liverpool and find your perfect cake, but your wedding is down South.
