History

Established in 1997.

The Basement idea began in 1997 when the trustees got together and tried to identify any weak links in service provision for the homeless community in Liverpool. It was decided that an early evening drop in facility was needed to bridge the gap between existing daytime cover and people being able to access hostels.

The Basement wanted to get away from the Victorian soup kitchen idea of support services for rough sleepers and provide somewhere that the service users could get involved in and feel a sense of ownership. Clients were offered a range of supportive services as well as facilities where they could make themselves a meal & access showers and a laundry. The staff team could also start on confidence building to bring back some dignity and self respect to this much maligned and misunderstood group.

The doors finally opened in 2000 and we have gone from strength to strength ever since. The feedback we get shows us how much we have improved life for hundreds of homeless people and
