Metal is an arts organisation based in Liverpool and Southend on Sea.

We are a multi-​disciplinary organisation and work in a supportive role with artists providing space for them to develop their practice. In 2004 we moved to Liverpool and are now based at Edge Hill Station, the oldest passenger railway station in the world.

We programme regular events and cultural activities for the station buildings on platform 1 and 3 including: Film nights, a creative group for artists and local residents called Future Station, drama groups for adults and young people as well as discussion events, performances and exhibitions. Other organisations and artists also occasionally use the spaces to programme their events too. We are currently working on an ongoing Archive project to document the history of Edge Hill Station and the surrounding area. This will include a website, publication and exhibition due to be launched in November 2011.

History

Established in 2002.

Metal was founded by Jude Kelly OBE in 2002 and was created as an artistic laboratory to champion the need for continual investment in artistic investigation and the development of innovative ideas that could shift the thinking in the UK cultural sector.
