The Mariners is a long, wooden pub that seems to go back for ages, like the inside of a galley. Some of the locals do look like they’ve been chained together and asked to row. Maybe that was just me. With one side taken up by the length of the bar, this is an ideal place to prop up and spout lies to anybody who will listen. Aside from that, there isn’t much to do in the pub but shuffle round trying to wedge yourself into conversations until you get frowned at or slapped. Still, at least there’s a quiz machine.

One of the few pubs in the village to have a pool table should tell you something about the nature of many of the drinkers along this stretch of Liverpool. The Mariners is not somewhere you want to go for a quiet drink or consider yourself something of a shrinking violet as the collection of characters here can be something of a handful. Gets a good crowd in for the football, especially Liverpool games but there is very little of great distinction about the place.
