One of the best Indian meals I’ve eaten. Started with idli(steamed rice pancakes) which were served with a spread and a pleasantly spicy soup. Had Beef Curry, claimed on the menu to be their specialty, and Chana masala as my mains. Never had beef at an Indian restaurant before, but honestly the beef itself was not the highlight. Both dishes’ sauce had a wonderful spicy flavor, more nuanced and aromatic than I’m accustomed to. And the thick creamy Mango Lassi drink was a nice accompaniment. Highly recommend!

Well the name is hefty enough isn’t it… Maharaja!!! Wow now that doesn’t exactly translate into king as you might expect… Maharaja’s choice of cuisine was in the upper echelons of luxury cuisine. Will it live upto its name was the thought I had in mind before I tried this place. Look, believe it or not there is a difference between conventional Indian cuisine and«south Indian» cuisine. The main difference you’ll notic if you look carefully on the menu, where you’ll find dishes you won’t on a normal Indian restaurant menu. The Dosa for example is like the hall mark of South Indian cuisine and it is delicious. I went for the Masala Dosa, this tasty delight is a paper thin pancake made of rice and black gram batter filled with mildly spiced potatoes, served with sambar(lentil and seasonal vegetable curry) and coconut chutney. Another amazing side order which is very different from a typical nan bread is the Malabar Paratha, absolute heavenly this is… A Kerala speciality bread. Wheat dough made paper thin, layered and coiled, cooked on the griddle. I’d advise you to be prepared though as the food tends to be very hot. I recently discovered south Indian food and must admit, I have been unreservedly won over by it. This palce is a must visit, fantastic food and quality prices.

The Mahraja restaurant on London road is a reasonably well presented restaurant amongst a bit of a shambles. I’ve eaten here once around 6−7pm and we were surprised to find the place deserted, only one couple came in during the duration of our meal. As a party of four we were well served by an attentive waitor, unfortunately it was the blandness of the food that let Maharaja down. 2 chicken curries and one lamb seemed to be fairly indistinguishable, the vegetarian curry seemed to be the only sucess story. Price wise it worked out just above £11 a head, with non-alcoholic drinks. It’s a shame with such potential and reasonable location in terms of transport that the Maharaja isn’t recommendable. Maybe it was just a one off and I’ll have to try it again.

Located on London Road which is perfect for travellers from Lime Street and those going to the Empire Theatre, this fondly discussed Merseyside curry house certainly has its accolades. Heartily recommended on Liverpool Confidential I thought it best to check it out myself, and I wasn’t disappointed. That regal sounding name is apt as you’ll find enough choice here to be bowled over sideways by. Doubtless there’ll be plenty you haven’t tried, so it’s super if you’re feeling a little adventurous. It specialises in South Indian cuisine, known as Keralan, and is the first of its kind in the north west. This variation of Indian food is steeped in rich history and if you’re into finding out the origins of your ruby murray it’s well worth checking the website as it tells you plenty about the backstory of Keralan food. It doesn’t step too far off the beaten track of your regular curry so you’re unlikely to find any unpleasant surprises — sweet and savoury spices like cinnamon, cardamom, curry leaves and ginger flavour the likes of seafood, vegetables, soups and meats, and it all tastes fresh and delicious. The dishes are moreish, all at reasonable prices, and the décor of the restaurant is particularly relaxing with reassuringly clean features. They’re more than happy to take big groups and the staff are endearingly polite and endeavour to look after their customers. Be sure to check out the tamarind rice as an accompaniment, it’s lush.

Highly rated by Gorden Ramsey when filming in the city, the Maharaja offers good curry at a good price — especially if you have the lunchtime business special curry for less than £7. Tradtitional recipies, fresh ingredients and large portions make for an excellent meal. The restaurant is suitable for couples and has a separate function room for large groups. Its simply decorated and I didn’t really like the glass table tops.
