If you’re in Liverpool, NEVER visit this pub. Disgusting service, especially from the very rude and aggressive managers. They created a tense and horrible atmosphere. Not worth your time!

A lovely protected inventory pub so it’s appearance is well worth checking out. There are a couple of screens but they don’t impose too much, especially round the back. There were a handful of beers, mostly local which suited me well as I am relatively unfamiliar with Mersey Ale.

Think traditional English pub, think Lion Tavern!!! These are the type of pubs that are quintessentially British that majority of us are proud of. Mainly because there is nothing like them anywhere else in the world. Paris is famous for its cafes, we are famous for pubs. When that tourist steps into the Lion Tavern for example they are no doubt probably thinking wow!!! There is a sense of warmth about the place. Now this in itself is an acquired taste environment. The smell of alcohol which might be great for some people is rather off putting for others. In places like these it seems to be stuck to everything. We might as well make these humble abodes whilst stocks last, for I believe they are a dying breed these pubs. Why I may hear you say, inevitability is the reason I reply. The future lies with the youth, and as Anthony points out the majority of the crowd here is old school. When old school is over in the next 20 – 30 years the place will have to shut down. Cider and cocktails is the future in the health conscious modern society. The sheer fattening capacity of beer and a more educated and globalized modern consumer is slowly but surely shying away from it all. Never the less it is here today and much merriment can be had with a group of friends in a warm welcoming environment at the Lion Tavern. Better make the most of it while it lasts.

Sadly too sensible to eschew the name the Lion Bar in favour of something more damn manly, the Lion Tavern is a gloriously festooned Victorian pub that stands far away enough from the riff-raff to avoid being smeared by their general grubbiness. It’s a miracle I managed to get in. Taciturn regulars aside, there doesn’t seem to be any inch of this place that isn’t a pleasure to roll your eyes across. From the polished bar tiles, to the ornate glass dome in the back room, to the wooden fittings as rich and caramel-coloured as the pub’s chocolatey namesake(or as tanned as an actual lion if you’re going to be all technical) this place is a pub-hunter’s Elysium. Definitely worth sitting in with an afternoon pint, despite the suffocating silence of the other customers.

CAMRA here we come! What can be better than real ale in the classically ornate surroundings of one of Liverpool’s signature pubs? This is a popular spot due to its central location and good reputation, and the gorgeous building doesn’t hurt either, especially considering it stands out of Tithebarn’s office street crowd. The drinks here are as you’d expect for beverages from independent regional breweries; they can get a little pricey but you’re not coming here to cane a gallon of lager, it’s more a sampling and sipping kind of job. It does get a little busy following work hours but if you’re not a 9−5er you could almost have the place to yourself mid-afternoon. The clientele really is quite mixed. The draught cider is really rather good, and there are no less than seven hand pumps with beer if you’re that way inclined. There’s also a massive range of malt whiskies if you’re in the market for a throat-burner or two. As well as this, FOOD! Albeit in the form of bar snacks, but come on, who doesn’t want a flabbergastingly huge pork pie the size of your face? Or my face? Well, not me, I don’t eat pork, but if I did I’d WANT one. There’s a quiz on Tuesdays which has proved very popular, and on top of that is a USP, the fact that there are so many clubs that meet up here too, it’s a great social spot and you’ll find everything from book groups to the Dylan society having a chinwag. And they’re all friendly too, just like the staff who always seem happy to see you.

An old fashioned pub for old fashioned men, this is the type of place you will find older gentlemen with well established careers in law from the nearby courts and offices or maybe hacks from the Echo newspaper. A very good selection of whiskeys and ales reflects this as does the straightforward division of the place between bar that seemed to be strictly for the gents and any women know their place round their corner in the lounge. I couldn’t be totally sure if they did food apart from spying an A4 print out advertising world cup hot dogs. There was a delicious aroma coming from somewhere though, I was just slightly sickened when I assumed it was coming from the rather sad and shrivelled solitary roast chicken that was sat in some sort of heated cupboard.
