The Lion and Unicorn, as a name for a pub, is somewhat strange. Hearing the name ‘Lion and Unicorn’, it makes it sound like it’s going to be a magical place where you can ride mythical animals around all day and play with fairies and pixies by your side. In reality, the Lion and Unicorn pub in Waterloo is somewhat of a disappointment in comparison. But then again, what wouldn’t be a disappointment compared to Unicorn World? From the outside, it looks pretty traditional but quite dingy and upon entering, the pub opens up and is surprisingly spacious. It does have quite an ‘old man’ feel to it — the regulars sitting at the bar all stare at you as you enter — but if you like pubs with that sort of atmosphere than the Lion and Unicorn is a decent place to have a quiet pint or two. Their range of real ales would impress the fussiest of middle-aged drinkers and the pub has a relaxing feel to it(on non-matchdays, anyway). Not quite as magical as the name suggests, but decent nonetheless.

I felt hugely let down by the Lion and Unicorn today, it felt as though there was some false advertising going on as I made my early judgement from the pub’s lovely façade. From there on in it went down hill the further inside I went culminating a very unpleasant trip to the loo — dead spiders hanging over my head and a squelchy floor couldn’t have summed up the difference between front and back of house any better! There are tons of pubs along the South Rd area of Waterloo and Crosby yet they all seem to want to come across as modern and trendy as possible which leads to a bland interior of Ikea prints and beige walls. This was the only place I found that seemed to serve real ale too only to be told none of them were on. However I could tell this was a local pub as everybody did indeed seem to know there names!

As there are so many bars and pubs in this region of Liverpool, you’d think that local landlords would be going out of their way to make theirs stand out. Offer customers something a little different. Some more creative entertainment, perhaps. Well, sadly not. This is just yet another pub. It serves drinks and general snacks. It has no atmosphere. It plays loud music. The décor is dated and to be honest, it’s a little dingy in there. The Lion & Unicorn does have some qualities, though. Friendly staff, reasonably priced beverages, pool tables, and a nice beer garden. And that’s about it. Perhaps more suitable to pass-through on an evening bar crawl than to sit in and watch the football.

Don’t really like this pub as it has no real atmosphere. More a place to pass through on a Waterloo pub crawl than a place to stay
