Cube has experienced its fair share of bad luck and equally bad press even being closed down twice last year by the police due to allegations of sexual attacks. Nonetheless it has returned and continues to attract a large crowd mainly of Liverpool locals who only head out on the weekend. The problem is that Cube is too chaotic and has far too much going on as well as the fact that the atmosphere is still quite unfriendly and you can feel very uncomfortable at times. There are four floors of standard club fare with blaring music and drinks offers at weekends as well as the occasional special guest appearance(the likes of tine tempah and dj target have appeared in the past). All of these things mean that Cube still maintains its place as one of Liverpools’ most popular clubs I just struggle to see why. Cube is a club that tries extremely hard but for me it is too unfriendly and to be perfectly honest I feel it is a place students should avoid as there are cheaper venues with just as much going on that also have a better atmosphere. If you are a Liverpool local who likes their nightclub to have a caged dance area and an overly crowded bar and dancefloor then you will enjoy Cube if not avoid at all costs.

I had the pleasure of visiting Cube too many times on freshers week/month and although theres a lot going for it in terms of décor it always ends up resonating a really plastic feel. The 4 floors are all distinctly similar offering little variety in terms of music choice, I say 4 floors although 3 are public and the 4th is available through a spiral stair case in VIP guise from the 3rd floor. This 4th section is the highlight of the club with floor to ceiling glass, a small attentive bar and outside patio area, sometimes this is available to the public and other times a wristband is required for access. Drinks deals in Cube are frequent but as the drinks prices decrease, so does the quality. Paint stripper vodka isn’t my favourite blend and £5 entry does start to sting when you remember you’re in a plastic nightclub and finding the music and atmosphere pretty average.

A monolithic, purpose-built nightspot just off Concert Square, Cube certainly looks the part, costing £3 million to build and with a shimmering glass front that displays the revellers grooving on each floor. It’s just a shame it’s a horrible, horrible place. With its old security staff, the club made the local papers last year for being one of the most violent places in the city. According to the Echo, this was a world of «alleged rapes, bouncers attacking drinkers, glassings and indecency.» Since last year the club has gone to great measures to correct these atrocities but it’s still never going to be my kind of booze-hole. My visit wasn’t met with anything quite so horrific but it was indeed noticeably unpleasant. Cube fits in with the Concert Square stereotype of being an aesthetically-wowing building, filled with the worst kinds of people and the worst kind of music. Hopefully since its clean-up, the worst you’ll wake up with afterwards is a smudgy entrance stamp on your hand.
