I was expecting somewhere quiet, deadly quiet actually with perhaps only the click click clicking of sewing needles to break the silence. Wrong. Entering Bramley’s I was swept into several conversations from the extremely friendly staff from which I had no chance of leaving — at one point I was even dragged into settling an argument, luckily I didn’t offend anyone and more importantly I already had my food! Bramley’s was, however, more expensive than I had expected. Over £5 for a salad and about the same for a limited selection of hot meals. The food was fine but with a coffee I was looking at £7 that’s a lot for a salad anywhere!

Ooh, for every good bunch of cafés there’s always one that has to rebel. This one isn’t too hot I’m afraid, or at least it wasn’t when I turned up. There’s nothing worse than being pretty much ignored when you arrive and waiting for ages for a little service… staff here just don’t seem to be particularly keen on their jobs, if you catch my drift. I’m all for colloquial staff and a little banter but if this only takes place amongst the staff then life gets a little boring. Meanwhile the rest of the experience wasn’t much better — the prices are astronomical considering the actual quality of the food and it takes so long to arrive, you’re almost tempted to offer to get behind the stove and cook it yourself. Not for me, I’m afraid. Might have been an off day but it’s a risk I’m unwilling to take again!

This was surprisingly my first time visit to this café as I always seem to pass it by unnoticed for some reason — probably because it is sandwiched between larger shops. Anyway, this is a decent little café that serves up good food which is fresh and not greasy at least as a first time experience. I ordered a salami toasty for £3.75 and a pure orange juice for £1.30 which was quite expensive considering it wasn’t much of a meal. The toasty consisted of little salami at all and had a small salad side. Even though it tasted okay, I wouldn’t say I got my monies worth but the atmoshphere was fine. However, it was a little noisy due to other people’s conversations. Apart from that, Bramley’s is a clean and well organised café with good air conditioning and friendly service. It also attracts a lot of the older generation which I always think is a good sign as it gives it that innocent feel!

Bramleys is supposed to be your typical greasy spoon café which serves up delights in the shape of fried brekkies and a good old cup of tea but unfortunately it cannot even manage that to a good level. This place just seems very lazy and as though it could be a lot better if it wanted too but there is the problem it is clearly happy ambling along producing below par food. I found the staff here to be very rude and they almost seemed as though serving the customers was something of an effort and this did not impress me in the slightest. The food was overpriced and the quality of it was very poor as a whole which reflects my general opinion of this place. If the staff and management could be bothered to make it better then they could have a success but based on my own personal experience I find it hard to believe that they will be doing that any time soon.

Bramleys stands in the shadows of Tarleton street, it is somewhat subsumed by the monstrous Marks and Spencer’s store opposite and generally bypassed for the Greggs nearby. Perhaps its proximity to the skanky Sayers deters prospective customers, which is a shame as Bramleys is a quaint little café(actually it’s larger than I had anticipated) and offers a much broader breakfast and lunch menu of home cooked hot and cold food. While takeout drinks are available, I think Bramleys is designed more for eating in, given the vast availability of seating. It seems to appeal to families and older people, with small groups of women and children all nestled into the wooden booths and tucking into a hearty lunch and a few old gents supping tea: it’s no Starbucks, but it’s lovely. The staff are real down to earth Liverpool lasses, they’re always busy but never brusque and they make a good cup of tea.
