Darling if this is not going to be Aurevoir, it has to be… Auberge! Coffee shops are brilliant, this despite the fact I don’t drink coffee at all, except being polite to people and drinking with them. How nice and dim of me! I too was charmed by the comparatively quaint nature of this haunt. Something different really does work. Tea for me thanks, no coffee and go on then I’ll give one of your bagels a whirl. For a person who likes to dine out a lot I should frequent these little establishments more often shouldn’t I? I guess the idea of snacking doesn’t really appeal to me. Well, it certainly kindled a new flame anyway. Becaseif it’s snacking I want then this place is as good as any other on Allerton road! So why don’t you Auberge your way over here for a «coffee“and a chat mademoiselle!

Auberge has a warm and busy atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive and you certainly feel easy to stay as long as you want with no pressure to finish your cake and tea and clear a table for the next customer. There is a good selection of food on the menu. However, not enough cake for my liking. I think it would be really good if there was a better selection of cakes and more on display, so I could stand and stare and contempt which one I fancy and then change my mind and go for something else. Auberge stocks Marinello sauce which I love and is another reason for me to drop into the deli shop.

I spied the gingham and rustic wooden chairs through the window which had a neon café delicatessen sign hanging in it and thought, hmm, why not? Usually, I would have plumped for something a little less grandma-ish but was feeling some good home-cooking was in order to comfort me after a hard day.(It was the choice of Smooth FM on the radio that made me really feel like I was at my nan’s.) What a good idea! It’s got a relaxing, warm atmosphere and although the waitress asked for my order about 5 seconds after I’d sat down(It was the end of the day, I understand perfectly!) I was ravenous so it wasn’t a problem, the lasagne and salad was really quite delicious, I only wish that it had been more cheesy and with a liiiittle less bechamel. One thing I noticed, which I will be coming back for, are the bagels. Hello smoked salmon and cream cheese! Oh and the turkey-club. They have a great range of items on sale in the deli, with preserves, pates and cheeses available… the one that caught my eye was the stilton, mango and ginger! mmm.

With its blue and white gingham table cloths, Auberge is probably the quaintest little coffee shop along Allerton Rd as many of its neighbours try and portray themselves as the epitomy of modern coffee shop chic. In this respect, Auberge is a little old ladyish as many of Allerton’s younger set will be found in the nearby rivals but that’s a mistake on their part as the food here is certainly fresher and there is even a good selection of deli items such as cheese and cold cuts, and the shelves are modestly stocked with preserves, pates and condiments. Its old fashioned, rustic style belies a place of understated charm.
