Visiting this local purveyor of newspapers and sweeties always reminds me of the days when my family home ran on electricity supplied by fiddly little tickets you had to cram into the meter whenever the previous chunk of power died. Oh what larks we’d have being plunged into darkness and realising it was too late to buy a ticket from anywhere else but this particular shop. Because of this, I still get a pang of relief when I see that it’s open. Inside the staff and customers are all on first name terms with each other which led me to believe I’d either stumbled into a private party or the friendliest shop in existence. Actually, it couldn’t be the latter because nobody at smiled at me. Maybe if I told them my name…
