Haven in the Vale Hotel

I stayed at this hotel when I was at a wedding in Grantham in October, and it’s safe to say I’ll never be going back.
First off, we booked 2 days in advance on
, but the hotel didn’t have any record of the booking. There were rooms available though, so luckily we were fine to get a room, although the manager was worried they might not be in a fit state as (actual quote) «they regularly aren’t». Quite why he’d tell us that I don’t know — I was somewhere between appreciating the honesty and amazed he’d admit to such a discouraging thing. But they were fine and we got sorted and went to bed.
I was then woken early in the morning by a weird noise. It was the sound of insects buzzing. It sounded like there were a few flies on the window behind the curtain, but I just tried to ignore it and go back to sleep. When I actually got up later though, I opened the curtains and was greeted with what could easily be described as an infestation of flies. There were absolutely loads of them. Frankly I’m disappointed in myself for not having the presence of mind to take a load of photos of it, but I was repulsed enough to just shut the curtains and get out of there asap.
So we went to checkout and were greeted at the reception by a lovely man who was the one redeeming feature of the hotel. When we mentioned it wasn’t exactly the best experience we’d ever had he was very apologetic as well, and was generally very warm and pleasant. I don’t remember his name, but if you’re reading this — you’re awesome! Anyway we also asked for the manager’s name as well as one of the people I was with wanted to write a letter about things. At this point he sorted us out with a taxi number and we went to wait outside for the taxi.
10 minutes later a woman stuck her head out of the door and and very rudely demanded to know if we had asked for the manager’s name, why we wanted it and if we were going to write any bad reviews online for the hotel. On me telling her yes, she said something along the lines of «well you can get your own bloody way taxi cos I’m not taking you», and stormed off inside. After standing in shock for a few seconds I went in after her but couldn’t find her anywhere. So I went back to the reception to find out what had just happened. It turns out the woman who owns the taxi firm we’d rung was the wife of the hotel manager, so she decided the best thing to do was be incredibly rude to customers who’d had a bad experience. I hope she reads this so I can tell you not only are you a horrible person, but also clearly an idiot. Once again though, the lovely guy on reception sorted us out and was very apologetic about it and said he won’t be giving her taxi number out again.
The whole experience was unbelievable really — the kind of so-​bad-​its-​hilarious experience that I’ve only ever heard about and assumed I’d never have. Suffice to say, I can say DO NOT stay at this hotel. And cross your fingers you don’t run into that taxi driver too — easily one of the rudest people I’ve ever come across.
