It’s a Wetherspoons pub, so you know what you’re getting, and it’s absolutely fine. It’s a bit devoid of character perhaps — the usual polished brass and patterned carpets, but the good thing about Wetherspoons is that they have a wide range of drinks, including real ales, craft beers, and their ‘gin palace’ menu. I had a half pint of some sort of porter — apologies that I can’t remember anything else about it — I had been up since 5am and was so tired at that point that I could barely string a sentence together, never mind remember beer details. Although I do remember that I had a few swigs of my boyfriend’s Erdinger while he was at the bar, and it was lovely — very refreshing. It’s fairly conveniently located if you’re in the area — it’s just down the hill at the back of the DLR Tower Gateway station, and in the same street at the Grange Hotel, the Premier Inn, and my favourite Indian restaurant, Café Spice Namaste. I’ve walked past this bar countless times, and had never thought about going in because, you know, it’s a Wetherspoons, but I actually don’t know why I was being so snobby about it, as they are good reliable pubs, with a decent range of drinks, and I would definitely go back here next time I’m in the area.

You know Wetherspoons, so you know what you’re getting, it is in a good area and since most of the places nearby are expensive, it is probably a good place to start your drinks if you are heading to Tower Hill area. The place itself is large, only one floor I think… unless there are stairs I’ve never seen. The food was good last time I ate, they have free Wifi, and always deals on shots. You know the deal. Open at the weekend too, which for the area, is an exception rather than the rule as the area shuts down over the weekend.

This is where joy comes to die. Tourists, I beg of you, do not come here– it will leave you with a wretched impression of london, a city with so many great pubs and restaurants to offer. I only ended up here because it was a bank holiday and nothing else was open, but what i would give to have gone somewhere more central for a halfway decent pub, even one reeking of beer and full of cranky old men. At least that would have some character and ale. Thats right– the bartender here informed me, «We cannot do ales today.» Any ales. The portion of chips is pathetic and for some reason the waitress refused to give me sauces. She pointed to a corner and literally said«Get your own.» It’s impersonal, the staff is rude, and did I mention no ales? If you are a tourist, or a local for that matter, just dont come here. Go to Draft House Seething or The Williams a short stroll away. And if it’s a bank holiday, take a 15 min bus ride to charing cross and go to the harp or to the royal courts of justice to go to the george. Just dont waste your time here. It is where joy comes to die.

Pretty cheap and pretty good! You’ll get a traditional English breakfast for less than 10US dollars.

Good little pub near the Grange Tower Hotel, nice place to grab lunch or dinner. I believe they also serve breakfast.

Great pub, lovely real ale but in desperate need of a refurbishment.

Friendly bar staff, prompt and polite service, cheap drinks including an ever changing selection of real ales and a wide selection of different ciders. Good location close to Tower Gateway, Tower Hill and Aldgate East stations. Only downside is that recently the pub has taken to filling every bit of space with more tables and chairs!

I like this pub due to the coffee shop atmosphere; it feels like a Starbucks rather than a pub. Its the best value in the area and often quieter than the others, as well as being open on the weekend.

Goodman’s Field used to be my favourite London Spoon’s, back in the day when Wetherspoon’s food was cheap and cheerful. Mainly, I think, because it was clean and never full of blotto lunatics. There’s something not quite right about it though, and it’s not just its puzzling location. It has the bland attempt at charm you find in hotel bars, but without the upmarket soft furnishings. That’s odd for a Spoon’s, since they normally find interesting older buildings and do a passable job of converting. Often there will be a theme or quirky original feature(cf. the Aneurin Bevan or Prince of Wales in Cardiff). With windows running the entire length of the building, you’d expect it to be light, but it manages to remain dingy. It’s still a cleaner example of the chain, but it’s about time for a refurb. Imagine if a Welcome Break motorway service station had a pub in it. In between the WH Smiths and Burger King. It would be the Goodman’s Field. You would be tired, slightly disgusted with yourself, and probably quite sad. Remember the series of Alan Partridge when he had to live in that motel? Yeah, that. Wetherspoon’s is no longer worth eating in now that the prices are proper-restaurant-equivalent, so that doesn’t leave much to recommend the Goodman’s any more, apart from the reason everyone including me frequents the Good Reverend’s establishment — cheap booze. The chain does do a range of guest ales, but I’m not a Real Ale Bore, so imagine I added something uninteresting about Wye Badger’s Scrote being hoppy, or something.

I go to this pub on a regular basis as it is very near to work for me. The staff are very freindly as our office go there so often. They serve very quickly even in busy times. Food is ok and you know what to expect. There appears to be a good selection of beers and wines but I don’t drink those especially so cannot comment. It is very near to Tower Gateway DLR. It gets busy at lunchtimes and in the evenings sometimes but the staff are always polite and serve you quickly

This place is a stickler for time. You can drink here till exactly 11PM, and food is available till 10PM. So this is what you hear when you enter at various times. 10:02PM — Kitchen closed. Sorry. 9:58PM — Kitchen closed. Sorry. 9:55PM — You have only 2 minutes to order sir. I say, give me a sunday roast and drink. He says, let me check with the kitchen. Oh, its already 10 in their watch. Kitchen closed. Sorry. They will serve me a drink at 10:50, but in 2 minutes come and say that i have to leave. Since i can’t take the glass out, i either leave it or have to gulp down the drink. I order my breakfast. Table number 61. More than half an hour later i go and ask what happened to my breakfast. We went to table 1 sir … it was empty … where were you? Even if there were a miscommunication, couldn’t you see me? I am sitting in 61, which is right in front of the counter. The only reason i am giving them 2 stars is that the breakfast, which is available from 10AM — 12 Noon GNST(Goodman’s Non-Standard Time) on weekends, is good and cheap, and some of the servers don’t harass me when i ask them to replace the hash browns with chips. If it weren’t in my building itself, i would never have gone back.

This Wetherspoons is above average for me. It manages to be big, without feeling like you’re drinking in a huge barn as some of them feel. Also, the clientele here is different from most Spoons as it seems to consist of mostly tourists and nearby workers. This means it’s a bit quieter than many of the chain. The staff were friendly and their service was good. Mind you, a few of their chairs and tables could so with being repaired, replaced or rebalanced through the careful application of beermats. Named after some bloke who used to farm the land for a nearby nunnery. Don’t think much farming or even nunning(?) has been done round here for a long long time. It’s right on a busy junction.

Wetherspoons pub, the usual cheap beers and food and at 3pm around six customers, the thing that got me about this particular pub was I felt for some reason I was sitting in a motorway service station. There was absolutely no feeling of being in a pub, the service was ok and the food average, but thats about all I can say

As far as the facts go BrixtonHolloway is simply right. As a real-ale drinker I am less impressed with the choice of beers there. Some good regular ales like Abbot Ale are sometimes not available here and the fancy guest beers dont always make you happy. If you just meet friends to chat — as we did — this place is alright.

A quiet, clean pub in the Wetherspoon’s chain, Goodman’s Field has little or no character, and about as much charm as a variable rate ISA. However, we shouldn’t really hold this against it — since what it lacks in charm it also lacks in offence. It’s a large, quiet, modern pub situated just round the corner from Tower Gateway. Like most Wetherspoons, it has themed kitchen nights, such as a Curry Night on Thursdays. The curry is bland but satisfying — par for the course really, and is also very reasonably priced with generous portions. Where this pub does excel itself though, is in the selection of guest beers, ales and bitters. Ranging from an American bitter that weighs in at a hefty 8% abv(which while tasty does resemble a pint of mildly carbonated whisky) to a Dutch beer made with chocolate(which does taste as weird as it sounds), it’s worth seeing what’s on offer. If you fancy a quiet drink as you pass through the area, possibly as a resting spot before moving on, this large, quiet comfortable pub is probably right up your street. There is a plethora of seating, with a comfy area boasting several large leather armchairs, and two or three flat screen televisions showing sports at a low volume, when there is sport to show. Add to that the fact the pub is open on Sundays in an area of London usually devoid of life, and this pub is ideal when you have a large group of folk looking for a drink, and the company is more important than the venue. Be aware though — there are better pubs in the area, such as The Dickens Inn, but Goodman’s Field does fill a gap in the pub market, playing to those who don’t like the hustle and bustle of a busy, mostly standing room only pub, but would like to sit down with friends, and chat over an inoffensive curry and a pint of beer with something interesting in it.
