The Butterfly and the Pig

This is a wonderful little restaurant with excellent food. Some people just know how to cook, and whoever’s in charge of the kitchen certainly does here! The ambiance is cozy/​comfortable and the prices are very reasonable. Love the menu descriptions! Very whimsical.

Excellent service. Excellent food. The steak pie was delicious with chunks of real steak. Can’t go wrong here.

I’ve always found the fanfare that surrounds the Butterfly and the Pig to be a bit of a mystery. The place is OK but I usually feel like it’s trying too hard (and that grates a little with me…) I’ve been into their Bath Street location numerous times over the years and while I don’t mind it, it doesn’t blow me away either.
I’ve been there for both lunch and dinner and have generally found the food to be decent but not overly inspiring. The menu has a good number of options, most of them on the comfort food end of the food spectrum. Please be warned though, the fried chicken burger is not battered (cause for much disappointment on my part the time I ordered it). It’s also written in an eye-​rolling hipster fashion which tends to leave me feeling sad inside.
On my last visit I ordered the cottage pie and I can’t fault the generosity of the portions, it was huge! Taste-​wise if was a bit more mediocre, under seasoned and a bit stingy on the cheese. It also had peas which is just wrong on so many levels…
Drinks-​wise it seems like reasonably standard fare for a city centre bar. Nothing too exciting on the beer front unfortunately, a couple of OK bottled beers but nothing great on tap. The wine choice is decent and I had a pretty nice glass of red last time I was in.
One thing is does score well on is the service, I’ve always found the wait and bar staff to be friendly and helpful and orders are delivered reasonably quickly.
Overall a decent bar with a reliable quality of food but nothing that really makes it stand out.

Y’know, being a weirdo, I’d like this place based on the name alone. I’m *that* fickle.
Not really, but it’s a hell of an opening sentence, c’mon!
Situated on Bath Street amongst a multitude of other bars, food joints and places for people to pass the time, you need a different take on things to stand out, to survive.
The fact that the Butterfly and the Pig has been here so long, and even expanded it’s empire briefly, says volumes about how this place has positioned itself.
For a start, the style? There is no style. It’s a mix and match. Benches, wooden seats, comfy armcharis, standard lamps that your Mum used to have, and much more. It’s eclectic to the very definition of the word, and it works.
Also, great staff. exceedingly helpful, and always happy and smiley — even in the midst of a Friday night rush. Drinks wise, it’s your standard bar affair (althought the lesser seen McLachlans is on tap, a welcome sight) and prices are fairly standard for city centre joints.
There’s live music of a multitude of genres if that’s what tickles your fancy, and there”s usually a seat to be found to take it all in.
For as long as I can remember, if I’ve been on Bath Street in the vicinity, I’ll pop into the B&P even just for a quick refresher and a sit down. It feels like I’m in someone’s living room, in a good way — and you don’t get asked who you are, what you’re doing there and told to leave before the police are called.
That’s a whooooole other story though…

There is a mid sized downstairs bar which is available for hire. Once you ignore the 3″ of dust or stoor as it’s called in Scotland you are met with exceptional service and plenty of smiles.
It was the chosen venue for a birthday by a 1 year old. In Scotland you might as well get them in to the bar early…
Good place for a party.

This is a great little place. We went downstairs where the live band was; and the beer. There is a tea room upstairs, but we didn’t check that out. I ordered the fish cake — salmon, halibut, and mashed potatoes. Serves two! And it was very good (although I could have passed on the egg on top).
They also had decent beer; and coming from the west coast of the US where IPAs rule; that’s not been easy to say.
And did I mention the live band? Nice…

Great gastropub. Service was excellent on a moderately busy Wednesday night. Atmosphere is homey and comfortable. The menu is a hoot to read. Had an outstanding meal consisting of a Glasgae tort appetizer, entrees of steak pie and fish cakes, and dessert of a pecan toffee tort. Live jazz from the pub area was a pleasant background for the end of the meal. Prices were a good value.

Quite quaint — like sitting in an old B&B on holiday but it had a charm of it’s own.
Food was very nice and plentiful, although visitors would have a struggle understanding the Glasgow dialect menu.
Staff very pleasant. We moved to the bar area, after our meal and had to move when the group started setting up around us, as we were on the stage! Not their fault, as we’d been in there 7 hrs. :D

Properly traditional Scottish food, the menu is hilarious full of puns and thick Scottish slang. As well the atmosphere is nice with mostly candlelight to light the room, it seems private despite being relatively close together. The décor is superbly eclectic with a hodgepodge of old stuffy arm chairs and old style English tea cups and plain cutlery.
The food was out of this world, I ate the steak pie. It had the most ridiculously flaky crust and a pot roast inside that could inspire Shakespearian love sonnets. Absolutely no complaints to speak of, the service staff was informed and friendly.

I feel bad for giving this restaurant 3 stars because the staff members are quite kind and friendly, but it’s what it deserves after my experience there last night.
I went to the Butterfly and Pig for a quick dinner before attending a show at the King’s Theatre which was just down the road.
I ordered the mushroom burger and my boyfriend ordered the fish cakes. We waited for an hour for our food and I became really anxious about missing the show!
The waitress realised that we were still waiting for the food and went into the kitchen to check on our order (it was so difficult to get their attention too!) She claimed that the fish cakes take a half an hour to prepare but we waited for much longer than what she explained (she didn’t mention the time to prepare when we ordered it either. We would’ve avoided it easily if we knew)
Tables that came after us were served food and were in the midst of eating while our table was still empty! It wasn’t very busy at that time either so I won’t take that excuse seriously. It was just disappointing! I had to pack my burger because we had to leave for the show.
The waitress compensated by charging my burger half price though which was sweet of her. But it was still an unpleasant visit.

Unilocal Shame: the feeling that washes over you when you realise you haven’t reviewed one of your all-​time-​favourite spots in Glasgow. I have it right now. I’m sorry butterfly and/​or pig!
There is so much to say about B&P that I will really struggle to keep it brief. If you’re looking for a great drinking spot, go here. How about a tasty meal? Yep, they do that too. What about somewhere nice to sit and read a book in a comfy chair? Perfect. Watch some football maybe? Yeh, you can do that too. Somewhere nice you can take your parents? They’ll love it here. How about a romantic date? Yep, ticks that box. I mean, we even had our wedding rehearsal dinner here. I hope that sums up how versatile and interesting B&P is.
There’s two large areas to B&P which is located in the basement; a comfy seating and drinking area on the left, and then a dining area on the right. I’ve been to both areas numerous times and have never found the place wanting. I love the quirky food menu — sure it can take a little time to decipher but that’s all part of the fun. The staff have a friendly and welcoming attitude — and can help you with the menu if needed! Prices are reasonable, the place is warm and has loads of cosy seats.
In fact — I’ve just realised it’s been too long since my last visit. I’m putting a return outing in my diary right now so stay tuned for an update shortly.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon the Butterfly and the Pig as I was looking for a place to have a chilled Tuesday evening drink. Passing by other pubs on Bath street, I noticed they were all close to deserted, but this one was not at all.
I had been there quite a few times before, for drinks and food, and had always been very satisfied with the experience.
So we went in and a live band (or rather, singer) was playing — sort of roots music — which was very nice. I must say the music is always a bit too loud there; you can’t really talk much, but that’s part of the live music experience I guess.
I played it safe and had a coke but my friend went for one of their vodka cocktails, with peach schnapps, blueberry vodka and cranberry juice, and it was delicious! (Yes, of course, I had a sneaky taste!)
I’ve also already had food there, an omelette if I remember well, and it was very tasty. They do much more than that though and I have heard many times that the food in the restaurant part is really tasty.
Overall, I’d say it’s a very safe bet if you want a relaxed drink on Bath Street. They have live music almost every day, so this is also a nice change.

Bath street has quite a few good bars these days. Many of them do food as well as drinks and are great options for a night out.
The butterfly and pig has been about for years now and has always been just a drinks location for me in the past, but last night I tried the food for the first time to.
It’s a really quirky venue. Everything is mismatched from the tables to the chairs and all the general décor. The staff are friendly and the menu has moved with the times and has loads of gluten free options. They also have some interesting drink options and I got a nice curious IPA.
For food I had the steak sandwich and chips. I was really looking forward to it, but to be honest it was very disappointing. It was an open sandwich which was not what I was expecting. The steak was fine but overdone. The bucket load of thick chips were poor, really bland and tasteless. The bread was completely soggy. Piled on top was loads of salad which was fine, but I would rather they made less but improved the taste profile of the whole meal.
Sad times really on the food front. I think I probs just picked wrong and others in our group enjoyed their meals. Lots to love about this pace, but on the meal I had I can only give it 3 stars.

We had our first ever Afternoon tea experience here. It was delightful getting to choose a tea and sharing little sandwiches and cakes. We really loved the sweet sliced pickles-​so good. The sandwiches are excellent and they did ask before they put our order in if we had any allergies. We had a Ginger-​Rhubarb tea which was very light in taste. The atmosphere is really cute and homey feeling.

I don’t know why but I always like frequenting ‘below street’ venues, something about them being a little bit hidden seems to make them a little bit more special? The Butterfly and Pig certainly takes hold of that notion and runs with it, the delightfully quirky but not overdone interior — all mismatched tablecloths, retro/​kitsch decorations — welcomes you in to the cosy confines. We got a seat at the window and started to peruse the wonderful menu.
It’s worth leaving yourself an extra 10 minutes to read the menu, it could be the kind of thing that annoys if overdone but it’s fun to read the descriptions and rambling introduction to what may, or may not (if they’ve been busy, or just lazy) be available. It’s a small touch that further helps set the tone.
With water brought to the table, and drinks ordered, we finally finished reading the menu and I choose the gammon steak and chips, with fried pineapple. At this point I’ll mention that I wasn’t wanting a big meal, neither was Clare who ordered a bowl of the spicy sweet potato soup.
The food didn’t take long to appear and oh my days… what a feast was set down in front of me! A large plate of chips, atop of which was a quarter of a pineapple, a large gammon steak, about an inch and a half thick, topped with a fried egg.
Remember how I said I wasn’t wanting a big meal, well I figured that meant avoiding starters and dessert, but I hadn’t reckoned with a gammon steak the size of my head!
Regardless I tucked in, and the first bite of gammon confirmed my suspicions. DELICIOUS! Despite the size, it was moist and full of flavour, so much so that a few mouthfuls later I realised I hadn’t touched anything else on the plate. I carved up the pineapple as best I could — it’s a nice presentation touch but cutting a pineapple with a not too sharp knife = pineapple juice/​bits flying everywhere, I’d have preferred it cut up for me in the kitchen — and scarfed a few chips.
After 20 minutes or so I realised something rare was about to happen. I wasn’t going to be able to finish my meal! Try as I might I was defeated, but wonderfully sated.
Overall it was pretty good. The pineapple was an annoyance, and the chips were a little on the soggy side but the quality of the gammon made up for that and then some. Fair to say as well that it was getting pretty warm inside by the time we finished so it was good to be back out in the fresh air!
I’ll happily eat here again, the décor and menu add to the novelty, the service was good and prices fair. I’ll just make sure not to have eaten for a few days beforehand!

Located a block off of the bustle off of one of the main shopping streets on Glasgow, the Pig and Butterfly serves as the perfect culinary oasis from the hectic holiday shoppers.
For a fixe price, you can get a pot of tea and a series of different sandwiches and pastries that are not only beautifully arranged, but are delicious as well. (See pic). On top of the delicious food, the service here was spot on… friendly, attentive, but not overbearing, and you definitely had the sense that you could take your time, relax and just enjoy the moment.
Price is extremely reasonable, costing only 32 pounds per couple, and included refills on sandwiches and pastries. Also, the place has WiFi
If tea is not your speed there is also a nice bar area, where you can get pub like food, located below the tea room area.
Would highly recommend.

Hier hat es uns gut gefallen. Die Speisekarte ist überschaubar aber das Essen ist wirklich gut. Es gibt auch britische Küche und anscheinend ist hier ein beliebter After-​Work-​Treff. Es ist sehr turbulent und etwas lauter, aber man befindet sich unter Einheimischen und nicht in einer langweiligen Touribar. Zudem stimmen die Preise.

Attention, prévoyez au moins 5−10mn pour lire la carte qui est une pure merveille, pleines de jeux de mots et de surprises (un peu dur au début avec un niveau d’anglais modeste) ! Ca donne le ton (de mémoiré, je n’ai jamais vu ça nul part ailleurs) !
La salle est divisé en deux avec un coté pub et un coté restauration. La déco de ce deuxième coté est originale, on a l’impression qu’un chineur a tout décoré, rien n’est identique (vous pouvez même jouer au jeu des différences dans certains cas)

Tout est frais, préparé sur commande, et certaines recette surprenantes et gourmande !
Je me suis régalé d’une hamburger végétarien (alors que j’adoooore la viande), où le steak avait été remplacé par le chapeau d’un énorme champignon, un régal !
Le service est super, avenant, et on porte une attention particulière à ce que vous né manquiez de rien.
Un de mes plus gros coup de coeur en Ecosse !
