Supermercado

Look up ‘Kick Ass’ in the Chris to English dictionary and beside beer, pizza, me, my daughter and a you tube video of a guy getting nailed in the balls by a football, you’ll find a flyer for the Supermercado at the Barras. FACT.
OK, so we all know about the appeal of the barras, the rough and ready ‘wanna buy a liver, goat, ipad… 2 for a pound’, the cheap, grease tastic hot food, the cool ass antique stores and the pure and honest thrill of the chase when it comes ti rifling through tons of gear in the search fir a gem… aye, we all know this. Yes it’s dirty, yes it’s rough and yes, some of the gear on offer can be a) Crap b) stolen or c) Stolen Crap, but for me that just adds to the appeal.
What’s on offer at the Supermercado though is something more akin to or in keeping with the West End vibe and shopping options. Hosted by the lovely ladies (cool cats) from the Made in The Shade, this coming together of all that is cutsy, kitsch, handmade, independent, funky and damn right cool kicks the regular barras options to the curb, paints their toenails, bedecks them in funky jewelry and buys them a cupcake… Here pal, munch oan that.
I was lucky enough to pop along for the Grand Opening and be treated to some excellent live music provided by a host of cool bands (The Meatmen really stood out), however you can tell from the piped in music that the vibe present for that day is more than likely evident most saturdays.
OK, enough fruity language… here’s the pitch. Cool, vintage, retro, indie weekly market selling everything from handmade jewelry to kick ass cupcakes (ooh and home roasted coffee too… I didn’t blink for about an hour… gooooood!), this market is well worth the visit to the East End… I will be back!
