St. George’s Cross Subway Station

It seems, at every corner, there is a leak of some sort in the city of glasgow. It doesn’t help that it’s been raining constantly ever since winter arrived. There has been a massive revamp of all the subway stations and this one is slow going compared to the rest of them.
The second you step off the subway, you’re catapulted in to the damp musty smell of the underground and as you walk up the stairs, you can actually see the water flowing down towards the tracks. Not sure how healthy this is, so I get out as soon as I possibly can as I’ve recently found that I’m quite allergic to mold.
This subway station is perfectly placed in between the edge of the west end and the edge of city centre, so I get off here when I have to be anywhere in between the two.

St George’s Cross is handy for Great Western Road and Woodlands, I also use it for going to the top end of Sauchiehall Street, or the Mitchell library.

St. George’s Cross, like Charing X, is an area that suffered much at the construction of Glasgow’s motorway network back in the 1960s; consequently this oft-​neglected subway stop is isolated in its own little island of roads. If you don’t know the area and are on foot it can be difficult to find your way into the station, as it nestles underneath the roads with a choice of 4 or 5 approach routes, none of which are terribly well signposted.
St. George’s X sits at the end of two of the old main routes into the city, Great Western Road and Maryhill Road, and it used to be a junction of some importance. There’s a fine sculpture of the eponymous saint doing his thing in the open area to the north of the station, although he seems to have lost his dragon-​slaying spear.
Although there’s not a great deal of interest around now, the station is still handy for anything around the Woodlands area, Charing X, and the pubs and shops at this end of Great Western Road.
Trivia: The station is built on the site of a medieval coal mine that was worked by monks and extended to the west as far as the Kelvin. They stopped the mine from collapsing by leaving pillars of coal holding up the roof — a thought that is perhaps worth bearing in mind if you are considering purchasing property in the area?
During the station reconstruction when the Subway was modernised in 1978, workers excavated 16 tons of the coal, which proved a handy side benefit of the job, as they were allowed to remove the coal ‘for their personal use’.

St George’s subway station can be found in the woodside area of Glasgow next to the great western road and Sauchiehall street. There is not much else there.

This used to be my stop when i lived on Buccleuch Street and although the Cowcaddens Stop tells you to «alight here for Tenement House» this stop is actually closer… although you do have to go through an underpass, over an overpass and down what i can only describe as a future crime scene… best sticking to Cowcaddens then.
Apart from nostalgic affiliation, this stop acts for as a stepping stone to further transport of a good jumping off point for nearby pubs, with the Captains Rest, Arlington, Liquid ship and the Halt Bar all in close proximity.
One thing to be careful of though, it can be a little confusing to navigate if your unsure of the geography. For the pubs its best to head straight through the wee tunnel and then either right for Captains Rest and Liquid Ship, left for Arlington and The Halt… there we go.

A handy stop situated at the tip of Great Western Road, St George’s Cross is widely used en route to Partick Thistle’s stadium and the Firhill Sports Complex, as well as the bars and restaurants of Woodlands Road.
It can be a little awkward to reach given its situation on a busy crossroads, so caution is urged when crossing here.

Ideal for Partick Thistle’s Firhill Stadium and the Woodlands Road/​Maryhill area, the exotically-​named St George’s Cross is just as its name suggests — right slap bang in the middle of a crossroads. Which is why when I came out of the station the first few times I got so confused, what with the two or three different staircases going in different directions.
While Kelvinbridge takes you right on to the middle of Great Western Road, St George’s X takes you to the far away end nearest Sauchiehall Street. With such an accessible subway network like this in the city with stations so close together, who can possibly complain that Glasgow’s transport network isn’t good enough?
It’s no wonder that people don’t get enough exercise!

Nestled nearby a predominantly residential area of GWR, (minus the small businesses), this station can be used to gain access to Maryhill Road, GWR, and Woodlands.
Like Liz said, I get the feeling it’s mainly used as a ‘passing through’ kinda stop.

In the Woodlands area of Glasgow, St Georges Cross station is in the middle of Great Western Road and Maryhill road, surrounded by cars.
The station can be used to access the Mitchell Library, which is an amazing place just to see the size of it. Otherwise there is a bike shop and a kilt hire place, but nothing much else in the immediate area. I get the impression that most people are just passing through here.
