Felix and Oscar

Because the coffee place where we wanted to go was crowded, we ended up here for breakfast, and I think it’s the best thing that could have happen ! The place is half a coffee shop, half a designer shop with clothes, books, goodies…
It’s so pretty !
It’s not the longest menu I’ve seen, but there is enough choices for every taste. I had the breakfast bagel and it was delicious ! The bacon was so thick: no fat (or just enough) but a lot of meat… Yummy ! And I had the best chai tea latte !
Even the staff is perfect (is it a family ?), first they forgot my drink, but they apologised with a smile and a joke. Loved it !
I think it’s a hidden gem in this street full of coffee places :)

Wandering round the area, mostly waiting for Valhalla’s Goat to open at midday I popped in here for a coffee and saw four magical words on the menu: French Toast with Bacon.
I realise then I hadn’t had any breakfast — well, technically I realised when my arm shot out, finger pointing at the chalkboard and me blurting out «Ohhh, that!» — but that makes me sound like some crazed idiot who hadn’t eaten any breakfast and had just figured out that he was very very hungry!
Anyway, I had a quick wander round the shop, it’s a nice wee place and although the shop side is smaller than it was in the past it’s full of quirky, fun items, perfect for some last minute Xmas pressies.
I sat down just as my coffee arrived (I told you, it’s a small shop) and it hit the mark. Nothing extraordinary but a good, hot, cup of coffee which is more than some places can manage.
Pretty soon, thankfully, my breakfast appeared. I’d asked for the bacon to crispy and it certainly was, and very soon it was swimming in maple syrup and being devoured.
A nice sweet french toast, helped balance out the extra saltiness from the bacon and it all disappeared quickly. Did I mention I was hungry? It was delicious, although maybe another rasher of bacon would’ve been a bit more balanced? Seem very bread heavy…
All in all this isn’t the kind of place I’d go out of my way to visit, Cottonrake isn’t far, nor is Papercup. It’s also a bit ramshackle inside, like they can’t quite make up their mind what they want it to be — shop with café? café with shop? — and it’s all a bit recycled feeling. But I guess that’s the point? I’m not sure it works.
It’s definitely worth a look if they keep the shop side going, the staff are friendly and helpful, the produce in the café is good quality, and I was sorely tempted to takeaway some cake or a ‘massive meringue’!
And, if you are lucky, the drummer from Travis will pop in too…

Conveniently situated on my way to work, Felix and Oscar is a delightful little shop to have a coffee, slice of cake and shop for presents, or for yourself.
They have a selection of women’s clothes, decoration items, gifts, cards, and toys very much worth spending an hour choosing from. It’s all in a vintage/​cute style, which I really like. I often buy funny/​cynical postcards from them, or gifts.
If I stop buy for a take away coffee, or sit in for an afternoon treat, I am also in for a wee chat with the owner, who is absolutely adorable. He also speaks really good French — such a delight!
I am less in tune with the toys section, but I have had a look a few times and there is quite a lot: surely something to please your wee ones in there!
So if you go, have a go at their carrot cake (scandalous!), with a nice hot chocolate (white, milk or black, made with real chocolate chips), or coffee like me. Maybe you’ll also want to try their Equis ice cream in the summer:-)

Always been impressed by this place. Have liked it even more with the café being added inside. The gifts and clothes sold are nice and on the quirky side. The café is very nice, with the home baking adding a lovely touch. I loved the Victoria sponge which I got a couple days back, also picked up a scone and a slice of cake or two for my mum. Would love to see maybe some plain scones or croissants there though, maybe they do have them and they’re always sold by the time I get there, who knows! Still a great place to eat and to pick up a nice gift.

Been here twice recently, and the service on both occasions was terrible. The last time we visited, we ordered three drinks (two coffees and one soft drink). Each separate drink was delivered in five-​minute intervals, rather than all together. The staff seemed almost entirely unprepared for the task of working in a café and were lacking basic common sense. Some customer-​service training is urgently needed.

I was on a mission for a present for a friend’s birthday and I remembered Felix and Oscar. It is still kinda F and O but it’s been taken over by the aroma of coffee and filled with cakes and all sorts of goodies.
I was a bit unsure if I could still purchase fine pleasant things from here or if it had been completely turned into a coffee shop.
Upon my entrance my eyes lit up. Yas! They’ve still got lovely gifty things stacked on the shelves. I heard a voice from beyond say hi. I looked around and there I found a man popping his head up from beyond the counter. He pleaded not to ignore him but he was disguised. I swear he was, or I was too busy gazing at the shop wonders.
I do find that the stock isn’t as much as they used to do so I did feel it was a bit limited. After a while the man realised I was in a state of confusion and I just didn’t know what to buy. He kindly asked if I would like some help. I explained my mission, he asked my budget and then he guided me to various habiliments and pretty things.
I was now under attack and gift ideas were launching out at me. I ninja styled their ass and I managed to get under control of it and choose a lovely scarf and locally homemade soap from A Pony called Steve. Please note there was no pony called Steve selling soap in the shop. It would be an interesting enterprise.
I felt I left with a lovely gift for my friend, I came under budget and I was delivered excellent customer service. I hope to try the coffee shop the next time I’m in. Those cakes did look mighty satisfying.

Well it appears that change is a good thing. Grrrr, change!

It’s quite simple folks, what were you expecting?
So yeah, I noticed a while back that this guy started to sell Equis ice cream, which I thought was odd given that it’s a gift shop. Well, it turns out that coffee and seating is now on offer! I’m not 100% convinced that the space lends itself to pulling off both things, but hey, why the hell not give it a go right!
Actually, thinking about it, this could be perfect.
Senario:
Woman drags huffy man to go shopping for gift for random associates friend who once sat next to a person who had the same dress as the other persons aunties hairdressers doctors cousins look-​a-​like.
Man grumps through duration of time spent in gifty place cursing the lack of female bits that would possibly allow him to enjoy the shopping experience, but then spots coffee opportunity.
Man and woman exchange knowing glances and go separate ways. One to shop, one to drink coffee and play Angry Birds (take that piggy).
Done.

I realise rent and rates must be high in this stretch of the city but be high but cramming a gadget or bit of plastic kitsch in every bit of shop space makes it so hard to move!
Not a well thought out or nicely planned shop, more of a, ‘stick it there and somebody will buy it’ kind of place. I was expecting a few gems not to be found elsewhere but I was disappointed to see it was all the same-​old, same-​old that this type of gift shop has sold for years.

Yes, it’s another ‘quirky’ gift shop which sells ‘cute and retro’ things which will be a really ‘unique gift idea’. Blah Blah Blah. We’ve heard it all before.
However, I think Felix is probably the cream of the crop when it comes to stores like this. I like the layout of the store, the size of it and the section especially dedicated to cute baby clothes which will certainly make you ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ without even knowing it.
The stuff in here is contrived, it is typically West Endy, but I can’t help but love it.
As Chris D said in his review, he doesn’t like it because he has ’ Male genitalia and am fond of boobs’. I like it because I have boobs, and all boobied creatures tend to like stuff like this. I am no different!

Felix and Oscar is a forerunner in the Glaswegian gift shop game — and believe me, there are now enough of these lovely wee places that you could dedicate an entire Monopoly board to ‘em!
I do still have a soft spot for this one. Believe me, the eclectic assortment of stock it has is your life saver if you’re caught short on a difficult birthday present. I have trawled the streets some Christmasses attempting to find the perfect gift and somehow wound up back here, getting my ass saved by Felix and Oscar.
You can find every kind of upmarket pressie idea in here, from cocktail kits and bathbombs for the ladies to Einstein figurines, boxers and balloons. They have a small selection of clothing on a solitary rail for the ladies. I’ve seen a few of their dresses in independent shops in Camden so I reckon a lot of their stockists are from down south.
With mugs galore, bags printed with Penguin Classics covers and high end novelty gifts, this place is great to uncover something relevant (and often intelligent) for friends. There’s some new mum survival kits and bibs for new baby gifts and an array of witty or pretty birthday cards.
A wealth of shops have followed in Felix and Oscar’s footsteps but the odd but pretty assortment of gifts in here are still a surefire winner for last minute buys.

I can never remember it’s name; I always say, ‘You know, that place down by Roots and Fruits’, but everyone knows what I’m talking about.
Felix and Oscar is one of my favourite shops, and, in fact, I visit it when I’m in a bad mood, because it cheers me right up!
It isn’t all that different from places like Papyrus, but with one significant difference: they sell designer clothes, which I haven’t found anywhere else. The clothes are a bit more pricey, but it’s because they’re direct from the person who made them. And again, you’ll be hard-​pressed to find someone walking down the street in the same outfit as you.
In fact, I bought a dress from them not too long ago, and (it’s not there now, I checked) it’s absolutely my favourite dress. I’d never had a problem with it (other than my clumsily spilling wine on it), but I gave them a visit and they offered a suggestion on how to clean it. It worked and I love them for not only remembering which dress it was, but also for being so helpful in saving my pride and joy.
They have little novelties, such as books called ‘Taxi-​driver Wisdom’…sock knitting kits, fortune telling books (for the bride to be), and notebooks. One of the items I covet are the set of Pantone mugs. Want, want, want.
It’s also a great place to go if you’re searching for a really cool bag, but something more outgoing and unique than the high street variety. Show your personality!
In the back corner, is where all the kid stuff is, and, really, a great place to search for that last minute gift for friends with children.
Their tagline should read ‘Felix and Oscar… it’ll cheer you up’. Works on me, anyway.

I don’t know who Felix and Oscar are but I can imagine a visit to their house would be an absolute riot.
Firstly, Felix will answer the door wearing a novelty moustache and glasses set just for the hell of it, and when you go to shake his hand he will be sporting one of those comedy buzzers in his palm which will give you a slight electric shock. Once he’s finished laughing hysterically about that, he will lead you down the hallway, lined with retro posters, and introduce you to Oscar, who will be dusting the «Grow Your Own» ornaments that are sitting on the mantlepiece. These include a Grow Your Own Husband, Grow Your Own Accountant and the ever hilarious Grow Your Own Breasts.
After informing you dinner will consist of cupcakes and showing you the recipe as noted down in his bright pocadotted notepad, you will be given the drinking options of a beer in a Homer Simpson «Alcohol, the cause of and cure to all of life’s problems» glass or a wine glass which holds an entire bottle. Five minutes later you’ll realise, well, that the novelty of their entire house has worn off pretty quickly.
Situated on Great Western Road, Felix and Oscar is a shop for the David Brent in us all. Stocking fillers, hen and stag party gifts, Secret Santa presents etc…
While the shop does stock some well-​made, stylish household items with a bit more longevity, most customers are generally after a cheap laugh that will be forgotten about soon after.
There’s a place for these shops undoubtedly, but with so many others stocking an almost identical range of gifts is there really any need for more than one?

A kitsch little shop that sells all sorts of quirky, cute and retro gifts — the sort of things you’d buy as a novelty or sweet little present but probably not where you’d pick up something extremely useful for yourself.
When I first discovered all the whimsical gift shops in the west end I thought this one was great but since there are so many selling similar things (sometimes the same) it is worth shopping about before buying — you’re unlikely to find a bargain in here. Good for a browse.

Creative and quirky gifts galore, I love spending time browsing for expensive (and sometimes useless) trinkets in this shop.
From funky notebooks to retro phones, it really ha something for the ‘modern lady’ in your life. As noted, some of the stuff is the sort of things you buy thinking «aww, that’s cute/​retro/​cool», such as a cupcake bakery book, which you might use once or twice at first, then you get bored, realise that there’s more to life than cupcakes (also, you find yourself questioning your cupcakes «why don’t they EVER look like the one’s in the book!?», and then it spends the rest of it’s days gathering dust on the sticky shelf next to your oven. Sad times. The plasters are quite cool (and useful) though — I personally own the pirate themed plasters, which give you a laugh, (not wholly suited for an office life however, so take note).
They also sell women’s clothing and accessories — the jewellery is quite quirky, to say the least (giant, glittery red love heart pendant necklaces and the likes). The clothes are sort of questionable (also, what’s with the random sizes!?), especially the pants (I think I mentioned them in my review of sister shop ‘Honey Beas House’) — £14… EH?!
Anyway. A nice shop to have a root around in, as there’s always something you will find that might complete your life (strawberry shaped shower caps?! I’m there…).

this place is a godsend — any time you need a present for a loved one, and you’re at a loss for ideas, get in there and have a poke aroundi guarantee you’ll come up trumps!

Great little gift shop, where I bought my Kath Kidston mugs and Pantone Series espresso cups. I loved the jelly beans jar contest at the end of last year that’s the kind of details that says more about this shop’s atmosphere than a long description.
Overall a must if you’re having a wee walk on the Great Western Road.

Could spend hours here browsing through all the unusual wee pressies. Not cheap but feels quite exclusive and unique.

A fun wee shop full of very gifty things, a good bet if your struggling to find a gift for someone, can be quite pricey but they have a good selection although I think they actually aim to not sell anything that is essential in any way.

This is a great wee independent shop, full of all manner of quriky gifts and household accessories. I generally have to avoid it when I don’t have a specific purpose in mind, otherwise I will leave with all kinds of things I never knew I needed. I don’t actually need them, but that’s the beauty of Felix and Oscar’s. It’s full of all kinds of non-​essentials that you just have to have. There’s a range of brightly coloured, funky kitchen appliances, clothes, bags, jewellery, books and general fun things to make your life that little bit happier and your day that little bit brighter. Pop in and cheer up your day.
