Specialties
Handmade & bespoke gold, platinum and silver jewellery.
For over 25 years Pruden and Smith have been designing & making extraordinary pieces for those who appreciate real craftsmanship. Whether buying a small silver gift or commissioning an engagement ring of a lifetime, buying directly from their workshop is an unforgettable experience.
Their gallery and workshop on Ditchling crossroads produces and stocks some of the most beautiful & innovative jewellery and silverware available in the UK today. Primarily designed and made by Rebecca Smith and Anton Pruden, they also showcase other designers, many of whom have worked for them in the past.
Using gold, platinum and silver, with precious and semi– precious stones from all over the world, these wonderful materials are given masterful treatment: whether buying or commissioning an engagement ring, anniversary gift, or re-making inherited jewellery using old stones and scrap gold.
In their famous silverware, from christening gifts to chalices, their commitment to design shows through all they make.
Commissions include Chalices for Ely Cathedral and jewellery for Julie Christie. Rebecca Smith and Anton Pruden are Freemen of the Goldsmiths Company.
History
Established in 1988.
Pruden & Smith was formed in 1988 by Rebecca Smith and Anton Pruden in Ditchling, Sussex, just a few miles North of Brighton. Anton’s grandfather Dunstan Pruden was the silversmith in the Eric Gill-founded Guild of St. Joseph & Dominic on Ditchling common, and though this was a completely new business venture, Pruden & Smith inherited a number of crucial aspects of this legacy.
The training they both received with Dunstan’s daughter Angela & her husband Philip Lowery in Gloucestershire was steeped in the combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art & design so justly valued in British Arts & Crafts. This high quality is at the heart of the products showcased on this website.
The Pruden & Smith workshop and gallery on Ditchling crossroads is a focal point for the village and often serves as a meeting point for family & friends. The building once housed Ditchling Press (of the Guild of St. Joseph & Dominic) and was purchased by Anton & Rebecca in 2007. More information a
