The Pork Joint

I remember calling my Mom to tell her about this place. My first visit felt as if I had stepped into a time machine and gone back to the 1960s.
It is greasy spoon café, with a very Black Country twist. The main offering is pork, as the name suggests. But they also sell Black Country take-​away delicacies including bread pudding and groaty dick (a slow cooked stew of groats, beef and onion).
This isn’t health food, in fact it is the exact opposite. The thick wedges of bread pudding turn the paper bag wrapping clear (Homer Simpson would be impressed).
Their groaty dick is good, though not as good as what my husband’s Nan makes. I find the chunks of onion way too big. You can buy it to take away and it makes a good dish to serve up when you’ve got friends or family visiting from out of town.
If you choose to eat in you’ll find that the mugs are all mismatched and the surroundings rather insalubrious. I find it fascinating to pass 20 minutes in there, mainly because the regular customers speak with such a broad Cradley Heath accent that I can barely understand a word.
