I have been craving proper fish and chips for a while now and living in Sheffield has meant I am surrounded by naff takeaways. I was delighted when my partners family suggested we go there to celebrate a birthday and I was not disappointed. I ordered the cod expecting a half empty plate but when the food arrived at our table I was taken aback. The cod was succulent, white and flaky — absolutely perfect. In fact, there was so much I couldn’t even finish the portion. The staff were wonderful, and despite one small issue, I couldn’t have hoped for better service. I’d definitely go here again. My only problem is, not being from the area I don’t know if it’s possible to get here by any public transport — I shall be looking into that!

I missed proper fish and chips when I moved to Rochdale… we have chippy’s yes, but they’re not the same as back home, the batter is odd, the fish isn’t the same and you call scraps fish bits… strange things you get when you cross the Pennines. I am unfortunately old enough to remember the days when you went to your local chippy and they served huge slabs of cod or long bits of haddock in a golden crispy light batter and everything was fried in beef dripping, and it all came over the counter to you wrapped tightly in real newspaper, all warm and cosy against your chest as you walked home tantalizing you with a wafting scent of vinegar, and newspaper print. You’d tuck in at home with a mountain of bread and butter, ketchup and for me a must have was a glass of dandelion and burdock(preferably Ben Shaws from a glass bottle)…mmmmmmmmmm These days it’s hard to find good fish and chips away from the seaside, and I mourn the loss of beef dripping(sorry to the veggies) but fear not, I have found somewhere that proudly uses it!!! Whitby’s is a saviour, hurrah! I have visited this restaurant a number of times now and it has always been consistently good — the service is excellent, the food is to a high standard and the only things that have stopped it getting a four star from me are the prices, and the fact that I’ve not visited the take away section yet, so a half mark extra would be more accurate, but none the less it’s good. Both the cod and haddock are succulent, pure white and flaky, the batter is perfection and the chips are to die for! I love their home made mushy peas and the portion size is rather generous. I have not tried any of the other items on the menu yet but I am reliably informed that their salads are wonderful and the steak pie is a treat that even Desperate Dan would struggle to finish! The restaurant itself is spacious, well lit, decorated in a modern style and has been bordering on the busy side each time I have been, but there are plenty of staff to cover the rush and you are never kept waiting at any point in your visit, the toilets are always spotless and there are also adequate car parking spaces. Good old Yorkshire fish and chips, you just can’t beat them!
