The Discovery Store

I expected much more from the store. It’s too modest inside and I missed the variety. I failed to choose something and won’t visit it again.

When I first noticed the Discovery Store I was overcome with excitement having been to similar stores in other cities. When I actually got to it, I thought I’d misread the sign. This is not the store it should be.
There is very little to discover here, and it seems much more like a crappy street or market stall with outdated toys than a store.
Anything they do have here can probably be found in brighter packaging and the generally more exciting environment of Hawkin’s Bazaar, or even the men’s toy and gadget store downstairs.
I can’t honestly believe that anyone still buys fluffy pigs that flip over, or any of the stuff here. And it’s a shame, because The Discovery Store usually sells some pretty cool stuff.
You might find the odd stocking filler, but the chances of finding anyone to give it to who hasn’t seen it before and for whom the novelty hasn’t long worn off is pretty slim.

If I ran The Discovery Store, I would charge an entrance fee; that’s how they’d make all their money.
Once you’ve been into this store and seen all the toys and gadgets and junk, then I for one feel like my work there is done. They have already provided me with all the entertainment that I can get from their products. Any more would just be greedy.
If you’re not aware of any children’s birthdays coming up, or it’s not during the Christmas period, you may find yourself wondering why people would ever actually buy these toys.
That being said, you doesn’t want a giant Rubik’s cube? The normal ones are just too easy after all (I say that with a little smile on my face because I can beat the Rubik’s in under 2 minutes).

Now that the gadget store is no more then there must be a place in Cardiff to buy pointless and unusual gifts for yourself and others around you. It’s good then that the discovery store exists for that very purpose.
Expect to find useless and slightly out dated little gifts that’ll raise a smile on the face of the recipient. Not sure what I’m talking about.
Remember those glow in the dark ceiling stars from the 90s? You can buy them here. There’s a little range of kitsch (or tacky depending on your threshold) bar supplies too.
It may not be sophisticated but it’s familiar. Where else in Cardiff are you doing to buy a fart sound machine?

I love this store, I often catch the big kids that work there crying with laughter, playing with all toys that I know I shouldn’t like anymore but want to play with.
It’s a pretty small and is more like a stall in my opinion. However it’s chucker with cool little gadgets and stocking fillers (If your a very a good planner)
I saw one of the staff crash a remote helicopter the other day, was pretty funny. It just flew a thousand mph up into the ceiling and smashed to bits, the guys face was a peach…

This store is a perfect place to get gifts for kids, teenagers, and maybe even big kids. They sell many gadgets, toys and gizmos such as remote control helicopters, dartboards, Rubix cubes, and even paintball kits.
Whilst mainly aimed at boys, the store does sell wind up fluffy animals, which I’m quite certain, are aimed at girls. What is more the store actually has a few of these out on display so you can definitely see what you’re getting for your money (the same goes for the remote control helicopter, which a staff member sometimes controls).
What prevents me from giving this store more stars, is due to its very small size. This wasn’t too much of a problem until I discovered how brilliant the Discovery Store’s website was, and the crazy, exciting gadgets that are not available in Cardiff.
I’d definitely recommend this store, as I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to find something to satisfy most boys, but if in doubt check out the website (they deliver!).
