As Scott Pilgrim taught me once, a long, long time ago, bread makes you fat. Which is just a crying shame and, if you’re one of those people who has a predilection for eating entire baguettes with just a thin layer of butter over them, you’ll understand what I mean when I say«STAYAWAYFROMTHEBREADSTALL!» My warning comes twofold. Firstly, it is a warning about weight. Eating too much bread makes you lose an incredible amount of weight, very, very quickly. This may sound a little counter-intuitive, but the reason for this is you will spend money faster than you’ll gain the fat. Sure, you’ll gain body weight, but the loss of mass in your wallet is going to ensure a net loss in total weight all over. The second reason is because the cakes at the Bread Stall are delicious, and I want them all to myself to help me gain back the weight I lose through buying the cakes in the first place… So stay away from my delicious cakes!

This is a shop inside the historic Cardiff Market. An old Victorian building that remains a good source of produce from local traders. As you enter the market you will be greeted by the same smell of fresh fish that has filled my childhood memories of this place. Once you’ve passed the fresh fish it may be fresh donuts, fresh fruit, not so fresh books or even freshly baked bread you smell. The latter will be coming from The Bread Stall. It can be found on the lower level of the market and it’s a busy little stall. It’s got bread of all varieties freshly delivered that day, as well as loads of cakes and other baked treats. If you’re unfamiliar with Welsh cakes then it’s crucial that you go right now to buy one for a mere 40p from The Bread Stall. If it’s night time then perhaps that is slightly unreasonable and I will allow you to wait until the morning.

My Grandpa was a baker. My mum sold bread in her deli. I too have sold bread. And cakes and have had the pleasure to taste the meaning of a baker’s dozen. As such I really appreciate good fresh bread, and how different it tastes from cheap supermarket sliced cardboard. This bread stall does not sell the best bread I have ever baked or tasted but it does sell nice, fresh, cheap-enough mostly white rolls. Lots of them. They sell white Petit Pans, Soft Baps and Finger Rolls at about 25 pence each. They also sell large and small cracked wheat(brown) rolls, crunchy French Sticks and ready-sliced tin loaves. It being a market in Wales, you can also buy Welsh Cakes(picau ar y maen, pice bach, cacen gri or teisen radell) here by the truckload. Indulge and wolf down with tea.
