This is one of the oldest departments of Welsh in Wales, delivering courses covering the culture and language of Wales — both for first-language students and second-language students. All modules are taught through the medium of Welsh, however, and those who take the second-language route are usually students who have studied A level Welsh(second language). A number of eminent scholars and writers have studied at the School, including W. J. Gruffydd, G J Williams, A. O. H. Jarman and Saunders Lewis. With modules ranging from the history of the Welsh language to Medieval Welsh Literature and Contemporary Drama, the school offers a really diverse range of topics for undergraduate students to choose from. For postgraduates, there are research degrees in various areas or four MAs to choose from: Welsh; Welsh Ethnological Studies; Early Celtic Studies; and Medieval British Studies. The School also runs a Welsh for Adults Centre, where staff teach Welsh to over 1,700 adults in the Cardiff area, supporting the learning of Welsh within the local community as well as within the University.
