Attended on Saturday and found the whole experience beyond disappointing. The waitress didn’t seem to have woken up that day– or showered– she was slow to take our drink orders and then delivered them about 40 mins after– including a room temperature bottle of water which we had to ask her to change. We had the tasting menus(vegetarian and the very over priced seafood one) — the starters were ok– no where near the best food I’ve ever eaten– we were all just extremely hungry by then. The mains were so tasteless and badly flavoured they were inedible. We were told that we could order limitless amounts of the mains– we weren’t really tempted with that at all. The chef came round asking how the food was– we tried to explain that we think they missed out the tamarind in the tamarind sauce– he just nodded and moved on– clearly just looking for compliments. I’ve been previously and thought that I’d maybe ordered the wrong thing, but we’ve now had 2 occasions where we were disappointed. Definitely not tempted to try again– waste of time and money!

Absolutely superb meal! My wife and I have sampled Indian food in many countries and this was up there with the best we have had, if not the best. A well deserved 5 stars from us.

I completely agree with Gabrielle’s review!!! We also had the taster menu and every mouthful was an absolute treat! I’m not always one for Indian or spicy food in general but when I saw the menu online I realised it would be a brilliant way of trying something new and a little more interesting and authentic than your everyday curry house /takeaway. The scallops and the sea bass were probably my favourites and, while I expected to prefer the lamb varattiyathu main dish, it what actually the Goan Porc ‘Vindalu’ that I enjoyed the most — nowhere near as hot as a vindaloo’s reputation gives as it’s more homage to the Portugese translation. The Olan it came with was also delicious. We went on a Monday lunchtime(our anniversary) and the service was without fault. They even brought us a special extra heart shaped dessert with«Happy Anniversary» written in sauce around the plate!(The proper dessert platter was delicious too! Definitely would go back and have sung it’s praises to colleagues in the office! Recommended.

This place is amazing! I have to say that its the best curry I’ve had from any restaurant so far. We had the taster menu and every single item we tasted was superb and cooked to perfection! I was particularly impressed with the scallop starter, the lamb curry and selection of the most tasty naan breads. I highly. recommend this restaurant and will. definitely be eating here again. If.there is one criticism to be made, I would have preferred to end the meal with a little chocolate, rather than the strange aniseed flavoured granules. that came with the bill.

overpriced and overrated the starter portions are a joke. i asked the waiter for diced onions and green chillis in a little dish maybe 3 teaspoons there was a charge on the bill for £4.99 when the bill came of £160.00 for three people i inquired with the manager pradeep singh who has no customer service skills his answer was wat do expect in a very rude tone i was shocked and horrified. never going again.

Read all the good reviews so i guess it was just a one off bad ewperiance. I fount the menu was very limited, from what I recall about 7 or 8 dishes. They could not prepare anything else, i asked for something with a little heat(old school style) and was basically given the Korma style curry but with chillis in. It was newly opened when we tried, so i guess its moved on alot, having said that these comments are fairly old too.

About twenty years ago some Chinese restaurants started to go upmarket and adopt less run of the mill menus with dishes cooked freshly. This is now starting to happen with Indian restaurants, and Mint and Mustard is a leader of the pack. A recent meal included a superb starter of soft shell crab in crispy batter with an Indian-style salsa(pictured), and a main of sea bass in a banana leaf with a paste of garlic, curry leaf, and onion, served with pilau rice. The fish was moist, and all the sauce flavours were separate, rather than just a vaguely curryish gloop. As Chris Lane says, the tandoori pineapple with ice cream is an excellent choice of pud. Good reports from others in our party for the Malabar Biryani(with a pastry crust), and the tandoori lamb shank. Our bill for four(three courses, a la carte) with drinks was £130 incl. service(which was excellent). This was about as different from the run of the mill Indian restaurant as Heston Blumenthal is from Ronald MacDonald. Go before something happens to spoil it

Food was well cooked, very pretty with contemporary presentation but it was a little bland. We went based on a few recommendations from friends and while the food was good, it wasn’t as amazing as I was led to believe. Service was excellent though, waiters polite, friendly and very attentive. The décor was a little shabby, draughty hole in the wall next to where I was sat, naans came in a basket with dust stuck to the weave. Probably went on a bad night, we were there on the second service, but I wouldn’t go again.

This place id definitely a cut above most other Indian curry houses in Cardiff. The menu was pretty varied and they had specials on each day. Lots of choice for veggies too which is good. I guess this place is a reflection of the fact that there as many cuisines in asia as there are regions. We have been swamped with tandoori places over the last 20 years but now it looks like anglo/Indian food is here to stay. Which can only be good for the rest of us. I went there soon after it opened and the place seemed very smart and clean and the service was seamless and quick. The staff were friendly and eager to help which was useful as a lot of the dishes I’d not come across before. Lots of choice of fish dishes which is what I wanted. They have a wide selection of desserts too which looked lovely. I didn’t have one but had a bite out of my friends which was really a treat for the taste buds.

This place is heaven! I think that Mint and Mustard is my favourite Indian restaurant in Cardiff… it’s certainly up there in the top three! If it weren’t for the fact that there are some other amazing Indian restaurants in Cardiff that employ the same visionary and innovative methods that Mint and Mustard have become known for, then they would be a clear winner! It’s stiff competition, but Mint and Mustard are definitely neck and neck for the top slot! What inclines me to choose this restaurant and not the others is that I love the people that work here. They are so genuinely friendly and eager to please,(but not in an obsequious way), that it’s really easy to relax and enjoy yourself here. It’s no wonder that they have had awards heaped on them for their food. They create really imaginative, top notch nosh for the discerning palette, and the word compromise doesn’t seem to be in their vocabulary! They use the best of the best ingredients, and everything on the menu is utterly deliscious!

Go here. Forget the greasy gruel that marks most curry houses — this is cuisine, my friend, and a healthier one at that — with oil used sparingly, wherever possible. Last year, Restaurant Magazine’s National Restaurant Awards named Mint & Mustard as one of the UK’s top 100 restaurants — and was one of just two Indian restaurants on the list. And you can see why. Even as a carnivore, I found the vegetarian tasting menu(my boyfriend is a veggie, which pretty much makes me one, too) to be a hearty alternative to the chicken korais I normally scoop into my pie hole. A word of advice, though — if you’re like me and hate yoghurt, then avoid the Bombay chaat, a Scotch-egg-looking delicacy that is filled with warm yoghurt and designed to eat in one bite. My idea of hell, pretty much. My only criticism is that the level of service can vary; the last time I was there, the server forgot our sparkling water until she was asked to bring the bill over. But the food more than makes up for it — every tasty bite was sensory overload. How many curry restaurants can claim the same? For those who enjoying not only eating Indian food, but preparing it as well, Mint and Mustard offer a master class with Chef Anand George. Let’s be honest, I’d rather have someone prepare a meal for me, but the class is there, if you’re interested!

For modern Indian cuisine in Cardiff, Mint and Mustard has firmly established itself at the top of the bill. I heard so many people raving on about this place before I got around to trying it, as it’s had loads of reviews and media attention. Chef Anand George has had massive success since setting up business in Cardiff in 2007. In 2008 he won both the House of Commons Tiffin Cup and the South Asian Chef of the Year. In 2009, Mint and Mustard became the first Indian restaurant to be named ‘Best Indian Restaurant’ and ‘Best Restaurant in South Wales’ at the South Wales Echo Food and Drink Awards. With expectations high, the place could easily have been a disappointment — but the food was divine and the service was excellent. I had the veggie Bombay Chat for starters, which is full of interesting flavours, and the delicious Allepy fish curry for main course, which is flavoured with coconut milk, ginger and mango. They also serve up some really interesting desserts, something which most Indian restaurants are hopeless at, so it’s worth leaving some room for something sweet. One choice is an exotic, delicate Rose Petal Crème Brulee, and another is a Tandoori pineapple with saffron and fennel. Mint and Mustard deserves every bit of its fine reputation — and now its neighbouring sister restaurant, Chai Street, also offers a cheaper, more informal daytime Indian eatery where you can enjoy authentic breakfasts and lunches.

I went with a group of friends to this restaurant the other day, thanks to all the lovely reviews on Unilocal, and can honestly say that this was one of the most memorable and fantastic meals that I’ve ever tasted. I really don’t quite no what to say to get across the spectacular nature of this place. So I’ll just keep the review short and urge you to go along yourself! Go! Now! Delicious and special in so many ways!

Ooooo it really is worth it’s title. It is utterly amazing and have indulged in the £351932809231 course meal. I struggled through it but felt it was my duty to try all the delightful food that I was lucky enough to have in front of me. Will defiantly come back again to stock up for hibernation.

I saw this place mentioned in one of those rubbish magazines First Great Western have on their trains earlier this month. Their review was so good I had to go. Before that I hadn’t heard about it at all, despite it having won the best indian of 2009 and the best welsh restaurant of 2009 award. I’ve never seen so many beautiful sounding fish dishes on a Indian menu and well everything sounded amazing, but since most of it was unfamiliar to me I did ask our waiter about how hot the dishes were ect because I was determined to try something new. The only thing I was disappointed about was finishing my meal. We went in the week and it was busy so I’d recommend booking, and also a couple of tables around us has the tasting menu which we decided against because it was £35 each, but it actually looked like an amazing feast. Is this the best Indian in Cardiff? Its defiantly top 3.

I came here emboldened by my success at a previous Indian restaurant(Balti Cuisine). I thought I’d try something a little bit more sophisticated to see if I still liked the tastes when they were cooked differently. The answer is a resounding YES. The whole experience here was amazing. The food was fantastic. The service was excellent. The price wasn’t that cheap but the standard of the food was so high that I cared not a jot. Even the loos were nice.

I ate at Mint & Mustard on Saturday 6th December, the food was great, but the service has bombed. I have eaten there several times in the last year but since the extension I don’t think they can cope. We were 2nd sitting for 9pm, & stood at front door for 20 mins, we sat down at 9.40pm, well some of us did, the restaurant was so full they didn’t have enough chairs. It was probably 10.20pm before we got the starters. The food was great, but previous items we had before we were told the chef would no longer serve. Has anyone had a biriani without a curry sauce? The service was the worst I have ever experienced at M&M and would probably think twice before going their again. Where were the friendly waiters, where was the assistance with the menu recommendations, we recommended the restaurant as we were with 6 friends, and to be honest we would have had better service in the Panama across the road. This really has soured our experiences, the back room is soul-less and had far too many people in there, and not one apology. Very very diasppointing experience
