I visited Canterbury in the summer of 2008 and had heard that the cathedral was really impressive. It lived up to the expectations that I had. I did not realise exactly how big it was and how long it would take to explore. It really was a beautiful place, but you probably do need to be interested in history, historic buildings, churches and the like to really get your money’s worth. I thought that the entry fee was quite expensive, but I suppose they do contribute towards the high maintenance costs of what is a huge structure.

Definitely can’t miss this if you come to visit Canterbury! The cathedral is a very impressive landmark and you can see it all over the city.

I just wanted to add that you should definitely spend some time exploring the cathedral grounds. Start at the cloisters for a quiet moment and then go through all the winding passageways to see some ruined walls, a garden, the library, and several courtyards. While not as impressive as the inside of the cathedral, I liked the feel of wandering as those who used to live here must have. We came about an hour before closing on a Sunday, so entry to the cathedral was free. The grounds stay open after the cathedral closes, so you can keep wandering when most people have already left. Oh, and it’s the mother of the Anglican church.
