History

Established in 1903.

Established in 1903 Punts are flat-bottomed boats which are propelled by using a long pole. They were developed in medieval times as work craft to be used in areas of water too shallow for conventional craft. One such area was the Fens, the wetlands north of Cambridge, where they were used by fishermen and reed-cutters.

Punting for pleasure became popular in Edwardian times. One of the pioneers on the River Cam was Jack Scudamore, who founded his boatyard in Mill Lane in the early 1900s. He is credited with establishing pleasure punting in Cambridge as an activity.

Today, the company he founded owns the world’s largest of punts, with over150 boats available on the College Backs and out towards Grantchester.
