History

Established in 1991.

We started out as a ‘drumming convention’ because we felt hand drumming had a bit of a bad name and we knew some fantastic West African drummers who were teachi9ng locally. We all had such a good time that we did it again and gradually we began to grow from 75 people the first year to our current size of 1200. Over the years we have expanded from our initial focus on west African drum and dance to include musical formas from all over the world. We have Australian aborigines, Cherokee Indians, Mexican Aztecs, Javanese ritual dancers, Inuit throat singers and drum dance song and ceremony from all corners of the globe. The main emphasis is participation and it is this that sets us aside from other festivals. We have all the fun of a festival but its the participants creating it! We became a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2002 and have a loyal Management Committee.
