Lovely pub but a tad on the pricey side. However it has amazing bar snacks especially the Scotch eggs

When will the star and dove get a Michelin star? is the question I ask regularly ! I’m lucky enough to have this hidden gem right on my doorstep and it never fails me, the best roast dinner in Central Bristol — they will even do a «whole roast«for groups where they let you carve your own joint at the table! I think they do 3 course for £26(I might be wrong there but it is definitely mid 20s) and worth every penny. I visited there recently on a bank holiday Monday and although their main restaurant menu was not on the bar menu was available, we picked several light bites and it was all delicious, especially the rarebit, the dishes all were between £4 and £6 and we also had a famous slice of sausage roll and a scotch egg. They have a great wine list and the other drinks are all really good, I’m not an ale drinker but my husband is and he thinks they keep a very good cellar. The star and Dove specialise in a very unusual menu, they use recipes and ingredients from olden days(cant think how else to put it) but its the kind of menu you could imagine Queen Victoria being happy with. I am always pleased to eat there because there is always a surprise, nothing is ever exactly what you expect it to be which is a joy(as long as you aren’t picky about your food) I should also say that the star and dove is a lovely local boozer as well, many a night I have spent in front of the open fire or in the nice sunny courtyard in the summer, they are welcoming to dogs and even sell little dog treats behind the bar, they are equally as welcoming to children and have the brilliant ikea highchairs(I’m always relieved when i see these in a pub or restaurant, other parents will understand) how they manage to get it all so right is beyond me. Really want to try their victorian breakfast, I’ll be sure to leave a review when I have!

The Star and Dove is a friendly gastro-pub serving really top notch food. The décor is elegant with wooden floors, classy red sofas and chairs, and a roomy feel to it. I ate downstairs, but had the ‘à la carte’ menu. It was completely packed out, and they managed to serve a table of 20 with all the meals coming out at the same time, which was impressive in itself. On top of that, all the food was perfectly cooked and presented, and reasonably priced. Definitely better since the last change of ownership.

I’m a big fan of the Star and Dove. I love how the place is decorated, check out the gorgeous green walls in one of the rooms. The Star and Dove is down to earth while being fashionable. I was here early one evening and a lady had her dog in the pub, it was nice to see that the staff were down to earth enough to allow this. It feels much more spacious than my other fave pub across the park, the Windmill. I have drunkenly danced and done poi in here without knocking anyone out. It plays good tunes and can recommend for a quiet night on the lash ;-) I thought the food was rather expensive for what it was when I last ate here, probably as it was some mate of Jamie Oliver that was the chef. I haven’t eaten here since ownership changed again so am intrigued to check it out. Pork roast with crackling sounds super yum!

If you like your pubs to possess a regal quality, The Star and Dove will be to your taste. Elegantly decorated, with wooden floors, deep red sofas and chairs to match, this venue certainly has a touch of class. Large and spacious, I have never felt less claustrophobic in a pub. Furthermore, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the staff are friendly and the punters tend to be pleasant folk. I’d recommend this pub for a romantic night out with a partner or an intimate gathering with friends. Drinks are a little bit on the pricey side, but worth it for the quality of the venue itself. The food is also top quality, and is priced accordingly. For a fulfilling pub experience, this place gets my vote.

Some friends invited us to join them to try the restaurant at the Star and Dove, recently refurbished and under new ownership, and about which they had heard good reports. I don’t quite know what I was expecting but decent food wasn’t it, but I was destined to be pleasantyl surprised. Our main courses were excellent, especially the trout and cockle broth served with shell on cockles and I particularly enjoyed the ham hock hash, very smoky, tender and tasty. I could have lingered for coffee but the wooden chairs were hard and unforgiving and on a sofa alongside us a couple indulged in an energetic bout of snogging so we thought they’d like to be alone. For all that, go there, the food is very good.

Distinctly classy this one, for a pub at least. Details like polished wood floors and a piano in the corner pull in a crowd to match and take up the nice leather chairs. Have more than just a pint and you’ll spend more than you want to here, with a two course dinner at fourteen quid. Not horrendously expensive, I know, but hardly cheap. They justify the prices with some delectable ingredients — you’ll get asparagus with your boiled eggs. I’m not the biggest fan, but perhaps this is only because I like my pubs cheap and cheerful(and this is largley due to budgetary constraints). It’s certainly a pleasant place to drink, with some nice quiet corners and comfy chairs than invite you to wile away your afternoons here. Certainly worth a visit if you’re in the area, just make sure you don’t spend more than you intend to.

This gastropub seems to be crawling towards a position of respectability via a series of takeovers. It used to be an old man’s pub called the Cumberland before it was taken over with much fanfare and relaunched as the Star and Dove a few years back. However, it soon gained an unwanted reputation for the unhelpfulness of the staff. It’s recently been taken over again, with one room being changed into a family room which has a cornered off play area and also welcomes dogs. The menu remains similar(typical English-style comfort food) with good portion sizes, though it’s still a touch overpriced. They’re very obviously trying to promote a community feel, though only time will tell if they can rescue the establishment’s somewhat tarnished reputation.
