I do always enjoy a tipple in The Stag & Hounds. Located just the wrong side of the tracks. Which I do belive makes this a cool ass establishment. Come here for a drink before town or come here for a sesh before who knows what? The location is very handy, situated at the arse end of Old Market. The External décor in tudor style is very striking. And upon entry it wont let you down. Dont know how old this place is but it looks it ! Music wise they have it goin on ! I’ve enjoyed both a Punk night and Techno night here. And always found the atmosphere and staff to be very amicable. Most nights of the week the atmosphere is more sedate with the odd evening post worker here and there. The beer price is very reasonable and they have been known to put on a mini festival or two. Oh and they have a roofish terrance for bbqs and funtimes.

The Stag is a funny old pub and has recently changed hands so more changes may be afoot. It’s a bit of a dark, dank pub on a summer’s afternoon but then on Friday nights can be packed to the gunnels with office workers. The rest of the time it is a favourite spot on the gay scene. It serves great Pie Minister Pies and a broad range of pub favourites but I’ve always found something a bit lacking there during the day. I think because of its location, on the polluted Temple Way roundabout, it attracts a clientele which is a total mix of passers-by and loyal followers. Being an ex-hack myself I’ve seen many a leaving do descend into debauchery here so perhaps that is what I find slightly depressing about it. But it’s also the views of queuing traffic that get me down. However, if you’re with a lively crowd it’s a good, cheap and central location to sink several pints.

The rainbow flag proudly hanging in the window should give you a clue to what type of pub this is — that’s right, you guessed it, it’s a gay friendly pub. But far from being one of those intimidating gay men only pubs the Stag and Hounds opens its doors to all sorts of clientele. Go in there on a Friday night and you will undoubtedly find a forlorn looking, ever-shrinking group of old hacks from the Bristol Evening Post building next door drowning their sorrows due to the latest batch of redundancies. Head there on a sunny afternoon and you will see some office workers and students cramming onto the two of three benches outside with nothing to look at but a giant roundabout and a dual carriageway. And on occasion, you may just see comedian Justin Lee Collins as I’m told that this is one of his favourite haunts.

A nice pub, i think that could surfice as a review Good if you want a dinner time pint, average on the food side, a big screen to watch sport, and a decent sound system, though sometimes it can be too load(especially if your sat right by a speaker!) For all you budding journalists out there a good spot to meet the great and the good from the close media crew, i’m pretty sure a few of them pop in for a cheeky pint on thier lunch break i know I have… erm I mean would! It’s a bit too expensive for what you are paying for(by that I mean 10p more then you would think on your staple pints) Also when I went they wern’t accepting cards, don’t know if thats a full time thing or just on my visitation.

This pub wears its timber framed building with a shrug, not dressing itself up as too restrained and traditional(they play hip hop over the sound system when the mood takes them). As expecting somewhere on Old Market it pulls in a mixed crowd — probably a fair few journos from the nearby Evening Post and the usual mix of office workers and shoppers you get in city centre pubs. Whilst they do have a few real ales there’s the staple Fosters and Stella. They seem to get busy at lunch time but do a good trade throghout the day. Whilst they don’t make too much fuss about the old building the pubs in it is pretty and worth coming to have a look at. They do sports and have got a gigantic screen, which I don’t really appreciate but I suppose it’s a not bad place to watch a game. Pretty much just a down to earth pub in a nice building
