Business Owner

Dom has been involved in Baking since the Age of 15, he qualified with city and Guilds at Brunel College. He then went on to the YTS scheme at Mountstevens Bakery where he worked until they closed down. He joined The Breadstore 11 years ago and on 1st July 2011 him and his wife bought the business from the original owner and we have just kept going from strength to strength.

He was taught to bake bread the traditional way and that is what we would encourage anyone interested in baking to do, the satisfaction that you can say you made that loaf by hand is brilliant. Supermarket Bread and our Bread is totally different it isnt mass produced so will never be 100% the same every day, but that is the great unique quality of a small bakery. We do not add anything extra into our loaves, no added salt like supermarkets or even sugar to keep it fresh. Our bread is baked daily and can if kept in a sealed bag last for 2⁄3 days and still taste good.

The smell of this place as soon as you walk in– my god! Smells like my grandmas kitchen… a place of sheer heaven surrounded by baked goods :)
The bread is always really fresh and the cakes… are scandalously good.
I do like art and humor, and two together is an amazing combo– check out their cool window displays :)
The main problem for me… a Que a long as the Nile trying to get in.
Once inside it’s like supermarket sweep, your in and out in 60 seconds…
I know what your thinking, if there’s a huge Que it must be worth it, it is totally but i’m the inpatient kind and Queuing for 40 minutes for bread is a bit nuts.
I almost wish they’d offer free treats while your waiting…
There are two great bakery on glos road… great to be spoilt for choice :)

I’ve seen people cueing outside and in the rain for this place; and rightfully so, its got the best breads I’ve ever tasted.
I was lucky enough to live a 2 minute walk away for almost 2 years and went in at least twice a week. We’d go to the butchers opposite the cider press and get some cold meats, cheeses and chutneys from the deli. Then head down to the Breadstore and get some fresh, warm bread. Its the best Sunday lunch substitute going!
Try the garlic and pepper focaccia bread, its crazy-​good!

i wold say the best bakery in bristol, can’t think of another that comes close. I think proven by the que outside the door! very well priced bread. get excited by the range!!!

This bakery is wonderful; stocked full of fresh bread and all at good prices too. This shop is something that Bristol should have more of. It sure beats buying bread that’s mass produced from stores like Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s.
The bread here is fresh, and has so many different types, you are spoilt for choice. They have baguettes, spelt breads, sourdoughs, foccacias, linseed bread, and you know that it is good bread by simply looking at the queues that form outside this bakery every day.
They also have a fridge full of cakes; some of which are the banana cake (74p), lemon and lime (74p) and flapjacks (63p with chocolate, 56p without). I don’t know where else you can get such home baked goodies for that price anymore. This bakery is such a delight to come to, and I hope it stays here for many many more years to come!

Sometimes you just can’t beat the smell of fresh bakery goods — and you literally try walking past this place but the smell is delicious and you find yourself at the counter about to buy some fresh baked goodies!
The Breadstore definitely delivers: its cheap, has a good variety of sweet and savoury treats, and everything’s fresh daily — what more could you want? I would say however that the queues can get quite big at peak lunch times. In my opinion this is the best bakery in the area… Greggs is just up the road but is nowhere near as good as this place. It’s also just by one of the bus stops on Gloucester Road that I normally get off at, which makes it a perfect stop for me — but it’s so hard to just walk past without going in! I’d recommend dropping in before closing and you’ll be able to pick stuff up even cheaper! Definitely somewhere to grab some lunch or a snack to satisfy your hunger!

This tiny little bakery has queues coming out of the door every Saturday morning and is the baker of choice for yummy mummies, students and locals who want fresh, organic and reasonably priced produce.
The queue is there for a reason — opposite the promenade on Gloucester Road, the Breadstore is yet another independent shop that this area of Bristol is famous for. The white crusty bread and poppy seed-​covered bloomer loafs (which always make me chuckle for some reason) are divine and perfect for brunch, toast or a hearty sandwich.
Once you’ve accepted that you’re British, and will therefore queue for as long as it takes to reach your chosen destination, in this case an iced bun or baguette, you can feel smug with yourself, proud in the knowledge that you’re doing your bit of local businesses!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen another bakery in Bristol with queues down the block, yet this seems to be a regular occurrence at The Breadstore.
Normally attempts to save money mean I stock up on supermarket deals, but I figured that this many people surely can’t be wrong and I assumed there must be something pretty special about the bread.
As usual, the law of numbers was right. The bread here is incredible, respectably priced and comes in all sorts of permuations, each one (seemingly) more delicious than the last.
I’m sure every person who peoples that crazy queue probably has a different bready recommendation, but my particular vote goes with the the mediterranean breads, soft and spongy with toppings ranging from olive to roasted red peppers to sundried tomatoes. Sheer yeasty perfection.

The Breadstore on Gloucester Road is the best bakery in Bristol (in my humble opinion). The bread and cakes are extremely cheap, great quality and the staff are welcoming and efficient. he back of the store has so many chocies of bread, rolls and baguettes that it slightly overwhelms you if you are trying something new. Their cakes are all made in the morning and taste great. The Iced finger buns are only 36p. I am always tempted to go in everytime i go up Gloucester Road, and it seems everyone else has this tempation — there is always a queue but thankfully it goes down quickly.

Top Tip: hit the shop at 6.30pm when it closes and they fill a large bag full of the unsold doughnuts, Chelsea buns etc for £1! Yesterday I got given 9 fresh jam doughnuts in one bag… bargin!

I first stumbled across this place when I was shopping on Gloucester Road a few weeks ago. I was in a clothes shop with my wife a few doors down and noticed a queue halfway down the street. A queue that long, something must be worth waiting for I thought. So I went out to investigate.
I joined the queue and it moved quite quickly to be honest, which was good, because it was just starting to rain. As I entered the store I was hit by the most awesome bread smelling bread shop I’d ever been in. Then I was confronted with an array of various breads from Spanish feast bread to a delicious looking banana cake. I bought a loaf of olive bread and had it for lunch. Tremendous. Possibly the best bakery in Bristol, but boy, does everybody know it.

I’ve heard that supermarkets pump out a manufactured just baked bread smell to get people buying. There’s no need to here, they’ve got the genuine article from 6 am Monday to Saturday. You can get an excellent large white overnight loaf here, if that’s all you should be wanting. They’ve got plenty of other treats to tempt you though. Sun dried tomato, rosemary, and olives all feature in various different loaves here — they manage to make a whole world of variation out of something so basic. The range of cakes too is diverse and tempting.
There’s frequently queues outside the door, which is the only thing that really keeps me from going. If you’ve got more patience than I have then or just really value decent bread then it’s certainly worth the wait. Worth knowing that they do sell out of stuff, so arrive early to avoid disappointment!

On a Saturday there are always three queues in Gloucester Road — for the butcher, the fruit & veg stall and for this lovely bakery.
It just has the best smell of fresh baked bread and the cakes! I recommend you release you inner Homer and get some of their donuts, mmmm donuts. Great bread and not too pricey against normal bakery prices, well worth a visit but get there early else you’ll be queuing!

I think the lengthy, but quick moving, queue says a lot about the appeal and quality of the baked goods on offer here. Avoiding nasty, artificial ingredients this bakery focuses on churning out virtually any kind of loaf one could want including mouth watering Spanish feast bread — chock full of peppers, tomatoes and herbs. Their green olive bread is also fantastic and I must stop listing everything I like because I would be here all day drowning in drool.
But don’t go away without sampling some of their other delights, including pizza and cakes. I would highly recommend a slab of their Banana cake, which if I’m honest I probably only buy because I am addicted to the butter cream frosting. That’s not to say the cake itself isn’t stupendous, I just have base tastes. To top it off the prices are very affordable and competitive with the prices you would get for bland, mass production at a major grocery store. There is no competition.

I stumbled across this little gem when visiting a friend who lives in Bristol. I could not resist joining the snaking queue (which went out the door and past the shop next door) for a savoury delight. It was worth every second of queuing and the staff were very friendly considering the constant flow of people they had to serve.

Outside The Bread Store, the annoyingly slim Gloucester Rd thoroughfare is chock-​a-​block with a large queue of salivating savoury aficionados each and every Saturday, all peering through the window at the delicious array of assorted baked goods, fumbling with loose change in their pockets, and forcing old ladies and mothers with push chairs in to the road in order to pass. The likelihood is, however, that the aforementioned pensioners and parents will most likely stop to see what the fuss is about, have a peek past a couple of shoulders and armpits of the queuers, and, despite their best attempts to force themselves to move on, will not be able to continue with their day unless they obtain some of the scrumptiously fresh goodies on view in the shops window.
The Bread Store is not a shop, it is an addiction — and a frightfully beneficial one, at that. You need it, on some unconscious level, like the need to breathe.

The shop with the permanent queue! Once discovered you will never want to buy your bread anywhere else! Or cakes for that matter. Adding to the authenticity are the people visibly preparing the bread in the back room. Worth travelling from all corners of Bristol for.

This shop doesn’t really stand out particularly amongst all the other shops on Gloucester Road from the outside but they do THE most amazing freshly baked bread. I don’t mean normal bread, they do like speciality breads… my favourite being something like sundried tomatoes with olives etc. probably some sort of Mediterranean bread but it’s so gorgeous it’s good enough to eat on its own or dip in some oil… or alongside a meal. However you decide to eat it, it’s amazing.
If you’re in the area, check it out. If you’re not, beg, steal or borrow a car to get there.
