One of the best chip shops in the centre of Bristol, mainly because there are so few, Rendezvous does an excellent battered haddock. And cod. And the chips are quite nice too, oh this is making me hungry! This is a no frills chip shop — limited menu but what they do, they do well. There is a restaurant/seating area towards the back of the shop but woe betide you if you try to eat your food before you leave the shop — if you haven’t ordered an eat-in meal the staff get quite upset and tell you off. Hidden away down Denmark Street this is great option for a treat on the way home from work or as a late night stomach filler if the thought of a greasy kebab doesn’t do it for you.

This is a pretty decent fish and chip shop located near the Hippodrome and O2 Academy in the city centre, meaning that it’s an excellent option for the midnight munchies. The guys working behind the counter are always very friendly and helpful. From a childhood spent working in a chip shop, I have developed a taste for onion vinegar on my chips and this is the only place I’ve found in Bristol that will come close to accommodating me. They didn’t have any onion, but they did give me gherkin vinegar instead. Close enough. You’ll find standard chip shop prices and standard chip shop fare. It’s nothing remarkable, but it’s a lot better than some of the other fast food joints in the area.

My favourite chippy in the town centre, the fish and chips are properly amazing, and the mushy peas are fantastic. I often come here for a sit down meal before I go out to a gig as they have a couple of bright rooms with waiter service. They also have a busy takeaway counter at the front. The staff are down to earth and friendly, used to batting away the randomness from the street that houses a rock pub, a nightclub, a gay pub, a theatre, a live music venue and a lap dancing club in one dark corner of Bristol. If you get takeaway after hours you can perch on some of the closed shop steps and watch the nightlife go by.

I live by a simple rule that if I’m drunk, if I eat something before I go to bed I’ll avoid the worst of the next day’s hangover(the payoff being that I get a bit fat). Therefore, I’ve found myself queueing up in this very busy chippy on my way back from the Academy/Hatchet on many occasions. In my opinion, it’s one of the best chippies in the centre, as it does real fish and chips — not crappy burgers and kebabs — though I usually opt for pie and chips with gravy. Try it — not only is it delicious but it’s a miracle hangover cure!

If you go out clubbing in central Bristol or just after visiting a show at the Hippodrome or have been in The Bunch of Grapes next door and feel peckish, visit this place as they always seem to do the most amazing chips. Everything else is pretty run of the mill for a fish bar but the queues are always out the door. They also have a seating area.
