This particular Pret has extremely friendly staff, but is not without flaws. I arrived after 2.00 to find the sandwich selection radically diminished. No problem, my friend exclaims, claiming that they can make the sandwich you want on site for you. When asked, the admittedly charming lady told me that this was not a possibility as they had run out of ingredients… I was a little suspicious. Still, the sandwiches I did enjoy were superbly fresh and delicious; well up to the standard of other Prets. As Jenni notes they do a lot of philanthropic work be it homeless people sandwich donation, serving dolphin friendly tuna and serving fair trade foods, so perhaps this is one chain worth supporting.

If you’re set on going to a chained-coffee outlet for a bite to eat in Bristol, for your sake I hope that you make it Pret A Manger. Not only is the quality of their food and drinks far better than their rivals but their fair trade standards and the work they do with the homeless around the UK put them at the top of my list. All their food is made fresh on the day, which you can taste the moment you bite into one of their filling sandwiches or seasoned salads. On winter days Pret is the best place to go to get yourself a chunky soup for less than £3. The choice may not be as varied as some of the other better known café’s in Clifton but what they do stock is nutritious, interesting and mouth watering.
