Something of unknown entity in Bristol. Johns Café Bar has quietly built up a reputation as a fantastic restaurant over the passed 20 years, serving a hybrid of Thai inspired dishes during the week and traditional Sunday Roasts at the weekend. Strange bedfellows you would think, but somehow they’ve made this work superbly well. Slightly off the beaten track(which is why it’s not as renowned as it should be) Johns Café bar resides in the back streets of Old Market and has a strong and dedicated following of local patrons. Only open three days a week, the food on Friday and Saturday is Thai with some very British touches thrown in like the Thai prawn cocktail — brilliant — or roast spuds to go with your northern chicken curry. All the dishes are packed with flavour and cheap too. But On Sundays, the style changes to good, old British roasts and these are among the best in the city.
