We have been trading for over 20 years from our city centre site, next door to the Hippodrome box office. We are very central and very easy to find. We are a small family run business and we pride ourselves on offering imaginative and well informed help and advice.

History

Established in 1991.

Chaplins opened it’s doors in October 1991. We initially sold an extensive range of original and fun novelty gifts, as well as fancy dress costumes and accessories. As the years have passed, we have extended the range of fancy dress stock to cater for increasing demand; we have simultaneously updated the range of novelty goods that we sell in line with popular tastes.

Our success has been based upon our basic business strategy. We simply aim to help people have fun… whether dressing a hen or stag for a bawdy night on the town, or accommodating semi-​serious theatrical groups in dressing their thespians for a stage performance. We have always been quick to respond to public appeals for specific products or themes and we have enjoyed our ability to satisfy ad hoc demands as they arise.

I wake up each morning with only one aim for the day… that is to help people have fun! Our business is all about just that. We sell the type of product that enables customers to change their appearance and to raise smiles; we sell silly tricks and jokes that have remained timelessly popular throughout the decades; we sell an extensive range of humorous greetings cards (some more irreverent than others), that make customers laugh out loud.

My background is in business and people management, but my reason for running a business like Chaplins is simply that I like to look at the lighter side of life, to always find a humorous angle no matter the subject. I simply enjoy showing people how they could use our products to create a humorous effect. Thankfully, our customers often respond positively and relax with our helpful direction.
