Soups and salads are pretty high on my list of the foods I really love eating. So this café is a no brainer for me — I really like it. It is really simple; all they serve are soups and salads, and very freshly made ones at that. They usually have a bit of bread in a basket that you take when buying a soup, but perhaps some people have taken advantage of that, because now you have to pay for the bread. Still worth it though. It really is perfect if your mates are having lunch along that row of food shops in St. Nicks and you don’t really fancy a cheese toastie, pies, or lamb koftas, but want something lighter for your tum. Every time I walk past, I’m always tempted by the fresh salads in the counter — especially their cous cous and the mushroom mix. They are delicious, and best of all, simple, healthy food.

This is a fabulous addition to the St Nick’s smorgasboard of culinary offerings. If you are after a lighter, cheaper and healthier lunch, this little soup and salad bar is just the ticket. They do a soup and salad meal deal for £4 so you can sample both and the portions are fairly generous. I thought there was a great selection of salads for such a small bar with chunky couscous, waldorf and at least four other types on offer. The selection changes every day as does the soup choice. I have variously loved their rich French mushroom, pea and mint and sweet potato and coconut. They usually have about four soups on the go so there is plenty of choice and if you are not in a hurry there are a couple of tables and chairs to munch at.

What can I tell you about About Soup and Salad, apart from what they’re about, is soup and salad! This sweet soup and salad stand in St Nicholas market is the perfect place to head on a cold winter’s day whenever you need a bowl of the warm stuff to warm your cockles. Both their soups and salads are seasonal which means you get the freshest flavours and ingredients. There are other places I prefer to eat in St Nick’s, but if what you’re after is healthy and homemade — About Soup and Salad is the place you should be heading.
