Service is fantastic. Food first class. It’s great this local chippy is still going after all these years. Now they do good Chinese food too. Check out the lemon chicken

Best in the area but that doesn’t mean great. Lewes Road adjacent, the area is full of a fare few nasty takeaways. These are the best fish and chips in walking distance and I went here A LOT as a grimy student living in the Hanover area. Many of my friends raved about the Chinese dishes here also, but I think the chips need to be bigger, I want more seaside chips and less fast food chips, I like fat chips okay!

Having lived on Islingword Road for a while, this is my go-​to place for fish and chips in this area. It always tastes fresh and the prices are reasonable — especially compared to what you’ll pay on the Front for something far inferior!
They also do an extensive Chinese menu in here, although I’ve never tried it. I have my usual Chinese — aren’t we sticklers, sometimes!
Just a word of advice– don’t bother asking if they swim with the fishes, in your best Marlon Brando… They’ve heard it all before, apparently!

The Codfather was an old favourite of mine when I resided in the Hanover area. I happened to be visiting a mate on Queen’s park Road on the weekend and stopped in for a bite en route.
I was pleased to see that they were still frying quality fish and chips. They always used to serve up golden chips, rather than soggy ones and it’s good to see that this is still the case. I would agree with Adam’s comments of a dominant Chinese menu these days, but there’s nothing to stop you going for the British classic. Prices are okay for what you get, but it can get a bit busy around weekend dinnertime if Hanover is feeling lazy.

This is without a doubt one of the best names for a chippy I’ve ever heard. We used to live just down the road so always got our weekly chips and fish from here.
The fish is really nice and fresh tasting but I do have a bit of a gripe with these guys. The food is absolutely dripping in grease, I know you get a fair nit with this kind of food but when it actually drips out over your floor, its a bit off-​putting. It makes the chips all stick together too.
Everything tasted fine just worry a little about the old heart disease thing when theres this much fat sloshing around.

Seeing as the main reason I went to this place was because of the name, there was no way I was going to buy anything other than fish. I did not even know, until entering, that I would have any choice in the matter. As has been mentioned already this place is a fish and chips/​Chinese takeaway hybrid, a slightly strange idea, and one which I think could be more fully exploited with an extensive menu of Chinese fish dishes. But alas, it is one or the other, unless you decide to server your special fried rice with a side of chips.
The day I ate here I was feeling particularly worse for ware, but I was entirely satisfied with my meal, the fish was fresh, the batter crispy and the chips flavorsome and un-​greasy. I shall definitely return, though I probably wont go for anything other than the fish menu, but with a name like this they’re asking for it.

Possibly the wittiest name for a takeaway I’ve heard since I saw an Indian in Manchester called Harry Ramadan’s…hilarious! But something that has really wound me up since moving to Brighton is Oriental takeaways posing as fish and chip shops, honestly they’re everywhere. The full Chinese menu dwarfs the fish and chip menu with an array of Asian dishes. It shouldn’t really be a point of contention, what with the possibilities and choices on offer, but I think one or the other. Regardless, the fish and chips in here are beauty although a bit pricey but don’t seem to get anything cheap anymore… even chips.

Oh my cod, the best name for a fish & chip shop that I have ever heard! The fish and chips are pretty good as well. I agree that the chips are spot on and I can put a shout out for the battered sausages.
They also have a Chinese menu which from what I saw was quite a large menu with plenty to choose from although I didn’t opt for the Chinese so I couldn’t comment on the quality. They sell their empty pickled onion containers for 50p a tub which I thought was quite funny. I asked if they actually sold any and they said that they sell them frequently! Like the godfather they too are shrewd businessmen.
Like Sophie if I am in the Hannover area I would go here first.

Fish and Chips is a seaside staple, as we all know I’m sure. And being a seaside town, Brighton has hundreds of places to choose from. However, proximity to the sea, my friend, does not a yummy fish supper guarantee! Therefore, choose wisely friends. If you live near the London Rd, choose Bardsley’s. If you live in Hanover, choose the Cod Father.
The name alone is enough, surely? So wonderfully cheesy. It’s simple wit was enough to draw me in regularly when I lived in the area. And they are more than just a great name too… the chips are really good, which is very important. They are crispy– none of this soggy malarkey you find in other places. The fish tastes fresh and the batter is not ridiculously heavy or overly greasy (don’t get me wrong, there is grease, batter is never going to be the healthy option!). They also do great fish cakes and have all the usual picked extras: gherkins, onion and eggs. You can even catch up on current affairs whilst you wait, as they provide papers! Honestly, what more could you want rom your local fish and chip shop? Bravo! 5 stars.

This is such a famous local chippie! Not just for the name, tho thats a really good pun. For the opening hours, the speed, the fact that its still a chippie. Its in the Hanover area, the loudest area of Brighton, with lots of arty types, student types, and squatting types, so it gets a real mix of customers. Quite a place.
