Regency Square

Regency square is one of the original ‘crescent complexes’ when Brighton but was a fledgling town. A lot of people are completely unaware that these terraces of houses were completely isolated from anything else along the coast line and served as weekend town houses for the gentry of London in the Regency period. Of course, since then the gaps have been filled by other building development, making them seem just like another road.
As a residential square it’s quite nice with the central garden (though not as good as Sussex square gardens). What makes this unique though is the Regency town house (that’s the web address I have listed here). It’s funded by the lottery and is a museum with a restored house as it would have been at the time the square was built. It’s a fascinating glance at original Brighton and they also own a cellar apartment a few doors down that has the hearth, servants quarters, meat room and suchlike at the time of original build.
It’s quite an unknown aspect of the city and well worth going on to the website to check out.

Whilst Brunswick and Palmeira Square consist solely of residential properties, Regency Square is home to dozens of guest houses, boutique hotels and B&B. There are a couple of buildings occupied by flats but mainly the square caters for tourists and out of towners. Some of the buildings, like Hotel Pelirocco, have been beautifully maintained whilst others have been neglected a little.
On a sunny day, Regency Square still offers breath-​taking views of the sea and a lovely spot to sit and catch the rays. It definitely lacks the grandeur and wow factor of Brunswick and Palmeira Square however, as the park in the middle is staggered over several levels and has a busy car park underneath it. There’s also a distinct lack of flowers and shrubs through the spring and summer and as a result, an absence of locals sunbathing and chilling out.
If the i360 Tower goes ahead as planned however, I’m sure money will be poured into regenerating and sprucing up Regency Square to cater for even more tourists!
