You can’t really go wrong with a £5 outing to a stunning Edwardian manor house like this. Not only is it a wonderful escape from the city for the day, but it also gives you a great insight into country living in the 17^th to 19^th centuries and how it must have felt to have all those rambling rooms and servants in true Austen style. Thankfully though you won’t be required to wear bonnets, ballgowns or breeches to spend a day touring the house and gardens.
Whether or not Preston uses the ghost card as a crowd puller and conversation piece, if you’re easily spooked you might find some of the Manor and the consequent stories about the lady in white quite chilling. It’s a cheaper thrill than Alton Towers at least.

Maybe you caught Most Haunted with the usual green eyed gaggle of gaffers, sound men and make up artists running around screaming, ‘What was that?!’. If you didn’t this pretty, shuttered 18^th C Edwardian villa is haunted, very haunted. By day it’s rather faded, facing the vast expanse of Preston Park. By dusk its wooden corridors lined with impassive faces looming from gilt frame oil paintings take on another complexion. It’s got Scooby Doo written all over it.
In summer it’s nice to visit during the Festival as the walled flower garden is used for promenade theatre. Last year was Alice in Wonderland and it was great — apart from the kids trying to fish the carp out of the pond instead of listening to the mock Turtle. I recommend this as well on a dismal M. R James kind of afternoon. if you don’t believe me about the ghosts ask the old staff.

This supposedly haunted manor house is a 16^th century building that, through years of renovations and additions, has become a great example of Edwardian architecture and elegance. Located next to Preston Park it’s not too far out of town and all tickets are under £5, making it a worthwhile adventure for the family or for anyone interested in classic buildings.
Apparently the house has a supernatural history, as it was featured in an episode of LIVINtv’s Most Haunted. The story goes that in 1897 the body of a woman was uncovered in the grounds of Preston Manor. Many people believe that the ‘Lady in White’, the ghost of said woman, haunts the rooms of Preston Manor to this day. If you’re into the paranormal you can book yourself on a ghost tour and enjoy some creepy stories.
