Last night I really fancied a cheesey pizza and Pizza Express used to be a bit of a favourite as a child so we decided toeat there. Theyve changed the menu in the last week– i think they are trying to make it more varied with more of an italian feel, my partner thought this worked and was very complimentary to our waiter but I wasn’t feeling it so much. I went for classic La Reine-nothing tricky and what I loved as a child. It was ok– certainly hit a spot but it was wafer thin with no crisp and not the cheese heaven i’d had in mind. When we came to the end, im a sucker for a tirumisu to take away — but they’d run out! Gutted. Opted for a Eaten Mess cheesecake(not very italian… which I admit I havent tucked into you yet so we’ll see. I felt like we spent quite a bit of money on not much, comfort food you know isnt great and doesnt make you feel great but you want anyway?

Surprised that Google and Pizza Express dont have this branch’s exact location listed, but hey. it’s next to the Jubilee Street library, off Church Street. I had a Gustavo ring pizza, which was served with some little salad leaves in the middle. A ‘light bite’ as they say, though not worth the £9 odd. finished off with a nice cheesecake and ice cream. Service was fast, and friendly. but the noise from the ‘pesky kids’ was distracting. Seemed to be the ideal place for yummy mummies, and ladies who lunch? Loowatch– upstairs, past the empty tables.

This branch offers something a little different to the average Pizza Express, and although it’s a chain, does seem to me to complement this particular location very well. I’ve always thought of Pizza Express as a modern, open kind of place, with most of their restaurants being lighter and airier than the average traditional Italian. So this just seems like a logical extension, the glass frontage letting in light and the sparkling lights of the place shining out, making me feel hungry every time I pass! Inside there are two floors with lots of shiny wood and efficient service. If I get a sloppy giuseppe or dough balls craving, I always head to this branch rather than the one in the lanes.

I hate to sound like a stick in the mud but the design and exterior of this new Pizza Express really grates me. Housed in between Jubilee Library and MyHotel, it’s a glittering glass cube with no ambience or atmosphere. The design is obviously supposed to compliment the buildings either side of it but I personally prefer eating pizza in a warm and homely pizza parlour or trattoria than a big, super-slick building. Try eating inside and see if the words echo chamber don’t flash through your mind at least once. I don’t mind hearing the clatter of forks and knifes as I eat but it gets a little distracting when every time you try to speak you’re competing with the constant din of cutlery, wine glasses and other diners voices echoing around you. As for the outside space, it’s supposed to feel romantic and al fresco but I found myself longing to be on the beach or the terrace of Terre A Terre. The one advantage this Pizza Express has over other Italian chains in the area like Donatella is they make consistently fresh and tasty pizzas. Just thinking about them, I could eat one now — but it would have to be a take-away.

I know it’s only Pizza Express, but I like it! it’s reliable, familiar and the food is good. I unfailingly go for the Giardinera, with delicious roasted veg on top, including mushrooms, red pepper, asparagus and artichoke hearts(yum!). I’m pretty sure you’re all familiar with the Pizza Express menu, so I won’t go on, but it’s an easy place to get fast friendly service and with so many varieties of pizza, everyone is catered to! I probably wouldn’t bother reviewing such a big chain, if it wasn’t for the architecture. This particular branch is housed in a stunning glass building in Jubilee Square. As part of a recent redevelopment, the modern architecture has been criticized for jarring with the more traditional buildings in the surrounding North Lanes area. I, however, have come to really like the building and think it’s pretty perfect for Pizza Express, as a company who obviously market themselves to a young professional crowd. The interior feels light, airy and spacious and being entirely glass, has 360 degree views of the local area. Spread over two floors and with ample outside seating, this is a great place for large parties. The outside seating is a really lovely, relaxing place to dine in the summer– you can sit and enjoy a glass of vino whilst looking on as the hustle and bustle of Brighton passes by.

This Pizza Express is housed in a stunning glass building designed to echo the incredible architecture of Brighton Library next door. It looks particularly beautiful at night when the whole structure is lit up allowing you to see the two floors and their busy inner workings clearly. I love the wonderful wooden stairs and ceiling in this restaurant as well. It was all this great design that drew me to eat there, not to mention the pizza. I quite like pizza express pizza– I can especially recommend the specially designed pizzas served on a grey slate. The only issue with the pizzas is that are often overcooked and lacking in tomato sauce. The only issue with the beautiful glass building is that from the inside it is very echoey and loud– better to look at from the outside perhaps… or go along on a quieter day, or sit outside. Admittedly we were sat downstairs where it was full of families when we could have asked to sit upstairs.
