You know where you are with Gregg’s the bakers, and this branch on Western Road Brighton is no exception. They have a great supply of low cost sarnies and rolls as well and their warm goods like sausage rolls, steak slices and pizzas. Not a lot of people realise that they will happily make up a roll or sandwich for you from scratch if you don’t see what you want on the shelf. Good, cheap, wholesome fare.

With the recession showing no signs of disappearing yet chains like Greggs and Forfars Fresh seem to be getting more popular than ever. The appeal is clearly that they sell fast and filling snacks like sausage rolls, sandwiches, baguettes and pasties for cheap prices. The variety is small compared to somewhere like Subway but the service is fast and the staff are usually friendly. The only thing that’s disappointing is the food itself. The baguettes and sandwiches taste stodgy, the cheese and onion pasties taste flavourless and I’ve yet to try a roll or loaf there I’d be interesting in eating again.
Clearly, it’s a case of economy first, tastebuds second.

Personally, I think Greggs is great. Inside you’ll find a nice selection of rolls and sandwiches, all of which look fresh and appetising, and all with more than enough variety in ingredients to satisfy most palates. You’ll also find loafs of bread, soft drinks, and heated products, like chicken bakes. The service is generally friendly, and everything in-​store is very cheap. This is a good place to drop into on your way into town if you’re a bit peckish.
