Arkwright Food Store

I love this shop. I live opposite and go there at least 3 times a week. The food is delicious (I have tried pretty much everything!!) and we always recommend. However, a few weeks ago, I went in and only had ten pounds on me. I bought a few things plus some fresh ham that they cut for me. When the total came to 10.20, instead of letting me off, they took a bit of ham back! This was quite embarrassing and also very stingy seeing as my boyfriend and I spend a lot of money in there every week and always recommend to all of our friends! This has put me off a bit and I wish had said something at the time.

You guessed it, Arkwright Food Store is a deli and grocery shop that sells all kinds of mouthwatering goodies. Alongside fresh fruit, veggies, salads, cheeses and meats, they stock lovely relishes, sauces, pickles, pastas, biscuits, jams and olive oils. The only thing I’d change is their bread and pastries — which are currently supplied by my least favourite bakery, the Real Patisserie.

Much has been said about the deli counter here, though nobody has mentioned the meat selection. If you’re looking for some Chorizo, Salami, Parma ham… This is the place to come. Its much better quality, and much better value than you will find at a supermarket. The Chorizo Picante went down a treat on my pizza’s last night. In fact, if you’re ever planning on making your own pizzas everything you need is here, and it’s all delectable.
Another thing that nobody seems to have mentioned are the range of the home made foods they serve; baguette pizzas, samosas, pasta, curry, and everything I’ve ever bought from them has been top notch. On top of all this there is a huge selection of grains, pulses, herbs, spices, and cans of all sorts. Highly Recommended!

One word. YUM. Many an hour has been spent browsing the densely packed shelves of this deli-​cious (sorry, just couldn’t help myself!) shop. With a brilliant cheese counter and mouthwatering selection of artichoke hearts, stuffed peppers, anchovies and the like, this is the perfect place to pick up gourmet picnic items on your way to Preston Park. There are also endless jars of delicious sauces and pickles as well as specialist pastas and breads. If you can get there early enough in the morning they have fresh pastries– the croissants are really light and fluffy… mmmm, just thinking about Arkwrights makes me hungry!
Unsurprisingly, its not cheap, but let me tell you, I have never been happier to splash out on delicious nibbles– this deli is a real treat!

Arkwright’s by London Road station is the decadent, mischevious twin to Sunny Foods a few doors down. Where Sunny Foods stocks organic, mostly healthy, food (all delicious admittedly), Arkwright’s sells all that is gourmet. The wood and glass door feels like something out of Open All Hours. The shelves are piled high with Italian biscuits, French jam as well as an array of spices, pasta and sauces. They sell Real Patisserie bread and patisseries– always a plus. And as the piece de resistance they have a deli counter with the most amazing olives and artichokes and other scrumptious things in oil. The artichokes are expensive but treat yourself one day– I promise they are worth it. They have great looking cakes and quiche– freshly made on site. My only quibble is that the girls who work there are very abrupt, sometimes to the point of rudeness. I always apologise so profusely for taking something like a split second to make a decision, until they feel bad.

This is one of the most fantastic shops in Brighton and I’m lucky enough to have it as my local store. It’s so odd and I imagine it hasn’t changed in years but it is full of charm. At the back they have a deli counter with meats and cheeses and loads of gorgeous home made savoury dishes. If you can’t be bothered to cook you can even buy filled jacket potatoes, and beef stroganof and the pizzas are brilliant. Yoe can have sandwiches made there too. They have a small but ample selection of fresh fruit, vege and herbs. Again a small but good range of fresh bread thats delivered daily. Every time I go in there they seem to have something different on the counter, pastries, cheese straws, croisants. The rest of the store is like a giant store cupboard with no particular order to it and although the shop is tiny, they’ve never not had what I’ve gone in for.
