This store is really cool, nice old fashioned candy store, kind of reminds me of the store in the Willy Wonka movie. Every wall is covered in all kinds of candy and there is an awesome selection behind the counter for ‘mix-ups’. Theres also a selection right in the centre of the store for American candy. Skittles, Reeses, Mountain dew, Jolly Ranchers that kind of stuff, oh and Tootsie Rolls(These are disgusting, they were disgusting when I was a kid and they haven’t improved). Nothing in here is especially cheap but then I guess you aint going in there for a cheap pick and mix. The US sweets are way over-priced, I guess due to import costs. All in all, I love this store and drop by often for a little treat, or just to be lost in the amazing smell.

Oldie Worldie sweet shop that I love to pop into for nostalgia and a sugar rush. Everything is reasonably priced too :-)

Worth visiting for the smell alone(a heady mix of chocolate, pear drops and candy) this is a nice little sweet shop situated at the bottom end of the splendid Great Western Arcade. My favourites are the unusual coloured chocolate bars with names like ‘Strawberry Switchblade’ but you can also buy lots of retro favourites here too. Think flying saucers, cola bottles and cherry lips — basically any sweet mentioned on those I heart the 70s programmes that were so popular a few years ago. Best of all they’re housed in lovely old jars behind the till and come wrapped in a paper bag. It seems a popular choice at Christmas and the staff are friendly and nice.

Nom nom! Although Mr Simms may not be as cool as the city’s retro-tastic Cyber Candy shop, this great little find in Great Western Arcade brings to mind some pleasant, traditional little curiosity you might find in Diagon Alley. Every town or village has a sweet shop like this which takes you right back to childhood and your nan taking you to spend your pocket money on sugar every Saturday. This is Birmingham’s offering, and you’ll certainly be spoilt for choice with the requisite boiled sweeties alongside other typical favourites — toffees, gummies, general yummies! Personally, I’d recommend sampling Mr Simms’ handmade chocolate, which is as good as anything you’ll find in Hotel Chocolat or Thorntons — and it looks just as presentable too, so a perfect gift in waiting! Definitely worth a trip to the Arcade if you’re out and about in the city centre and need a bit of a sugar fix to keep shopping ’til you drop!

This great little market styled shop has a very old fashioned feel about it, the kind of shop that takes you back to your childhood. They offer everything from the traditional boiled sweets, to lollies, nougat and cookies. The choice is never ending, and if you are anything like me, making a decision in a sweet shop isn’t easy. Try the peanut butter and chocolate flipz pretzels at £4.99, absolutely wonderful. A nice tasty snack, for a decent price. The perfect store for sweets and confectionary, whether they’re for you kids, family or a day out, you’ll enjoy spending the pennies in here. Overall, I thought this was a lovely independent shop with an enthusiastic service. You’ll visit this one again and again.

Stepping through the door of Mr Simms’ Olde Sweet Shoppe is like taking a step back to your childhood. With the demise of Woolworth’s and the presently poor standard of confectioners in general, it’s great to have somewhere that you can still find fizzy strawberry laces, lemon sherberts, gum drops, flying saucers and just about every other variety of sweet you used to save up your pennies for as a kid. The shop is stocked from floor to ceiling with a bright, colourful array of chocolates, sugary treats and flavoured jellies by the jar, with bags of mix and match, candy bars in a multitude of flavours and a selection of well-presented gifts for those friends and loved ones with a sweet tooth. It’s not cheap by any means, but I’d say most of Mr Simms’ trade is catering for rare treats and special occasions — this is not the kind of place you visit every day unless you are out to make your dentist a very rich man!
